Stuttgart battled to their third draw of the fledgling campaign last weekend in a 0-0 stalemate in Cologne, their second successive match without a goal. Pellegrino Matarazzo's charges suffered a setback in their efforts to remedy that during the week, with leading striker Sasa Kalajdzic moving to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers shortly before the transfer deadline. As a result, Silas and Tiago Tomas will be asked to shoulder added goalscoring responsibility for the south-western side, especially in light of striker Luca Pfeiffer's suspension following his sending off last week. With a tricky visit to Bayern Munich coming up on Matchday 6, Matarazzo will be particularly eager for his side to pick up their first victory in what, on paper at least, looks the most winnable of their early fixtures.
Schalke would no doubt have something to say about that, with the Royal Blues looking to re-establish themselves in the top flight following promotion from the second tier. Head coach Frank Kramer has had the difficult task of trying to restore confidence to his charges in the wake of last week's 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Union Berlin that left them in the bottom three with just two points on the board. That Matchday 4 result aside, Yoshida has been a stabilising presence at the back but it is at the opposite end of the pitch that Schalke have struggled most, scoring just four times so far. They will need talismanic striker Simon Terodde to get off the mark sooner rather than later as they bid to avoid another relegation tussle.
Watch: Stuttgart won 5-1 the last time these sides met in February 2021
Match stats
Silas is one of just three players to have scored for Stuttgart this season, alongside Wataru Endo and Naiuirou Ahamada.
Kalajdzic scored 22 goals in 51 Bundesliga appearances for VfB prior to his departure.
This match is the 99th Bundesliga meeting between these two teams. Curiously, each side has beaten the other more often than any other top-flight club; Stuttgart have 43 wins against the Royal Blues, Schalke have 38 victories.
Yoshida is one of just three Schalke players, alongside Cedric Brunner and Alexander Schwolow, not to have missed a single minute of action this season.
Simon Terodde scored 30 goals in 30 Bundesliga 2 outings last term, but is yet to find the net in four appearances in 2022/23.
Schalke are without a win in any of their last 30 Bundesliga away games.
