A 3-1 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach last Friday saw Stuttgart drop to 16th place and the relegation play-off spot. The Swabians have won only twice all season, but they have come in both home games under interim boss Michael Wimmer. Eleven points is the club's third-worst start to a top-flight campaign, but is four more than Bochum immediately below them. Waldemar Anton scored the 91st-minute winner in the last outing at the Mercedes-Benz Arena against Augsburg and will anchor the defence again. Hiroki Ito and Dan-Axel Zagadou both missed the Gladbach game with flu, but the latter is set to return. Josha Vagnoman is also fit again and could start on the right, freeing up Silas to play alongside fellow three-goal top scorer Serhou Guirassy in attack.
Jovetic looked to have hit some form before a hip issue ruled him out of Hertha's 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich on Saturday that ended the Berliners' four-game unbeaten run at home. Like Stuttgart, the Old Lady have also won just two matches all season - and just one on the road - and boast the same number of draws (five) and losses (six). It's only the fact they have conceded four goals fewer that has them above their opponents and outside of the bottom three on goal difference. Davie Selke and Dodi Lukebakio got the consolation goals against Bayern and should be rewarded with starts again. Jean-Paul Boetius made his first start since recovering from testicular cancer but is set to make way. Fellow survivor Marco Richter may also drop to the bench as Sandro Schwarz freshens things up for this midweek round.
Match stats
Borna Sosa has four league assists this season, more than any other Stuttgart player.
Wimmer has won three of his five matches in charge across all competitions (W3, L2). They had one victory from 10 prior to Wimmer taking the helm (W1, D5, L4).
VfB have won each of their last two home matches - their only Bundesliga victories of the campaign thus far.
Hertha, meanwhile, have lost their previous two away from home and, like their Matchday 14 hosts, have just two wins all season.
Lukebakio is Hertha's six-goal top scorer in the Bundesliga this term, while Silas and Guirassy are VfB's leading marksmen on three apiece.
Hertha haven't won any of their last six Bundesliga matches on their travels to Stuttgart (D3, L3).
