Union may have suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at bottom club Bochum last weekend but they remain one point clear at the top of the table going into Matchday 12. Furthermore, they received a boost ahead of this assignment with Thursday's 1-0 UEFA Europa League triumph over Braga - courtesy of a Robin Knoche penalty - which kept alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds. The surprise league leaders have also won all four Bundesliga matches immediately following a European fixture so far this term. All of which bodes well for Urs Fischer and his side, who are unbeaten on their own patch in 2022/23 and have conceded only three goals there. The Swiss tactician largely has a full squad available to him, with striker Sven Michel the only confirmed absentee. That means Jordan and Becker should continue up front, while defender Paul Jaeckel could return after being rested in midweek. Niko Gießelmann is another likely candidate to start - depending on how much rotation there is.
Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke has rather more pressing personnel concerns. An ankle injury keeps shot-stopper extraordinaire Sommer out once more, and he is joined on the absentee list by Ko Itakura, Stefan Lainer and Florian Neuhaus, while Kouadio Kone is suspended and Germany international Jonas Hofmann remains doubtful. That has all contributed to a significant dip in form over the past few weeks. The Foals are winless in their last three competitive games including a DFB Cup second-round defeat at Bundesliga 2 side Darmstadt and last weekend's 3-1 home reverse against Eintracht Frankfurt. Nevertheless, the form of Marcus Thuram offers cause for optimism. The Frenchman has a league-leading eight goals in 2022/23, including five in his last four games.
