Tuchel has "exchanged ideas" with Flick over Havertz' position at Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel has been in discussions with Germany national team head coach Hansi Flick over the best position for young star Kai Havertz at Chelsea.

The German has played in four different positions over the last two seasons, since joining the Blues from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for £72million.

Havertz took time to settle in at Stamford Bridge following his big money move, taking five games to score his first goal for new club Chelsea.

But he began to thrive following Tuchel's appointment as Blues boss, scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

His most impressive performances have come in one of the two positions behind the lone striker in Tuchel's 3-4-2-1 system.

He scored five goals and notched six assists from that position last season, helping Chelsea to a top four finish.

And it is where he has started the current campaign, with Romelu Lukaku now spearheading the Blues' attack ahead of the attacking-midfield pairing of Mason Mount and Havertz.

He has already scored his first goal of the season, producing a stunning header to open the scoring against Liverpool on Saturday.

Though he was taken off at half-time at Anfield as Tuchel was forced to shuffle his pack following Reece James' red card, it has been a strong start to the season for the young German.

But Havertz has not always played in that role, spending a significant portion of last season elsewhere on the pitch.

The position where he made the second-most appearances for Chelsea last term was in the central striking role.

At the time, Tuchel was looking for solutions to his team's problems with scoring, with Timo Werner out of form and Tammy Abraham not trusted.

That saw Havertz frequently called upon to lead the line, with arguably his best performance in a Chelsea shirt coming in that position.

That performance came in a dominant win over Crystal Palace, with Havertz scoring one goal and assisting another at Selhurst Park in March.

That versatility has drawn the eye of Germany boss Flick, who took over from Joachim Low following Euro 2020.

Havertz has mainly played on the wing for Die Mannschaft, but Flick believes he can make the switch to a more central role if required.

That is a change in position that Flick has admitted to discussing with Havertz boss at club level Tuchel.

"I do believe that Kai can play in the centre," he said in an interview with German news organisation SportBILD.

"I exchanged ideas with Thomas Tuchel. I can well imagine that he can also play in the centre."

Havertz could be given a taste of his new position on the international stage as early as next week, having been included in Flick's first squad announcement.

Flick's men will travel to Lichenstein and Iceland, with a home game against Armenia sandwiched in between in their next group of World Cup qualifiers.
