Transfer news live - Man Utd close on Weghorst amid Arsenal's Mudryk boost

mirror.co.uk, 11 January 2023, 05:59
The January transfer window is truly in full swing, with Manchester United closing in on a deal for Wout Weghorst, Arsenal pushing to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk and Chelsea set to bring in Joao Felix

The January transfer window has well and truly arrived in the Premier League, with clubs pushing to boost their squads for the second-half of the season.

Chelsea have reportedly struck an €11million (£9.68m) agreement to take Atletico Madrid want-away Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season. Though some pundits have questioned whether the Blues should have made the deal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are continuing to push for surprise target Wout Weghorst. Besiktas are remaining firm in their stance that they will not cut short his loan from Burnley, but the Dutchman appears to have his heart set on a move to Old Trafford.

One of the biggest moves of the window so far remains Arsenal's pursuit of Mykhaylo Mudryk, with the Gunners locked in fraught negotiations with Shakhtar Dontesk. Liverpool started the month strongly with the arrival of Cody Gakpo, but their search for a new midfielder has hit the buffers.

Chelsea questioned for Felix move

Chelsea's decision to sign Joao Felix on loan has been questioned by Premier League legend Andy Cole.

"Felix is undoubtedly a class player but if you're talking about £10m for a loan fee you might as well try to get the deal done on a permanent basis if you fancy him," Cole told Casinos En Ligne.

"I think he'll create a lot of goals but will he score a lot, Erling Haaland style? No. The two are totally different players."

Everton trying to sell fringe players

Everton are keen to sell fringe players, but Sky Sports News say getting permanent deals rather than loans is proving difficult this month.

Fulham have enquired about midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré, Southampton about Michael Keane and Nottingham Forest want Mason Holgate, but strenghtening rivals is not a good option.

Tom Davies and Dele Alli, who is on loan at Besiktas, are available also.

Wolves chasing Lemina

Wolves have offered Nice €10million (£8.8m) for midfielder Mario Lemina, according to Foot Mercato.

Lemina has Premier League experience, with Southampton, and could be returning to the competition this month.

Emery wants Guendouzi reunion

Aston Villa are interested in signing Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, according to L'Equipe.

Guendouzi played under Unai Emery during his time at Arsenal - and the Spanish boss is reportedly weighing up a move for the 23-year-old.

Atleti want Depay as Felix replacement

Atletico Madrid have reported identified Memphis Depay as a potential replacement for Joao Felix.

Besiktas identify Weghorst replacement

Good news for Manchester United: Besiktas have found a potential replacement for Wout Weghorst.

According to The Athletic, the Turkish club are considering a move for Vincent Aboubakar, who left Besiktas for Al-Nassr in 2021. With Cristiano Ronaldo now the star of the show in Saudi Arabia, he could return to his old club and let Weghorst move to Old Trafford.

Weghorst negotiations

Manchester United's efforts to sign Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season are not entirely straightforward, due to the forward's situation.

Burnley striker Weghorst joined Besiktas on a season-long loan deal in the summer, with the Turkish club agreeing to an option to buy Weghorst for €10million (£8.8m) at the end of the campaign.

It is therefore Burnley and Besiktas who are currently in talks over Weghorst. They have to cancel the original agreement before he can be loaned to United.

Petit not convinced by Mudryk

Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal to abandon their negotiations for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk and move for Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin and West Ham star Declan Rice instead.

"For me, Saint-Maximin would be a good option if Arsenal can't buy Mudryk," he said.

He added: "I know that Chelsea wants him, but if I were Declan Rice, I wouldn't go to Chelsea, I would go to Arsenal. The two clubs are going in different directions and the way Arsenal is playing, he would be the perfect option for Arsenal."

Man Utd strike Weghorst agreement

Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley this month.

Fabrizio Romano says that United have made a breakthrough in negotiations, with a payment of £2.65million (€3m) going to Besiktas, where the 30-year-old striker is currently on loan.

The move won't happen, however, until Besiktas can find a replacement for Weghorst, who has nine goals and four assists in 18 games for them this season.

Carroll signs Reading extension

Andy Carroll has signed a contract extension with Reading.

The veteran striker's deal had been due to expire next week. He has now penned a contract until the summer of 2024.

The 34-year-old, who is in his second stint with the Royals, has four goals in 17 appearances this season.

Mudryk off to Turkey

Mykhaylo Mudryk has travelled to Turkey with Shakhtar Donetsk for a mid-season training camp, according to Sky Sports News.

Arsenal remain in talks with Shakhtar over the structure of the transfer fee for the 22-year-old winger, but the fact he remains with the squad shows it is not close to being completed yet.

The Gunners remain confident they will get the deal over the line, with Mudryk's many social media hints strengthening their case.

Trossard a wanted man

Brighton forward Leandro Trossard could be on the move this month, with Tottenham among his suitors in the Premier League.

Trossard's contract expires at the end of June and it looks as though the Seagulls might be tempted to cash in now, rather than lose him for free in the summer. The Belgium international has 25 goals and 14 assists in 121 appearances for Brighton.

Various reports have credited Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle with interest in the 28-year-old.

Coventry sign Man City youngster

Coventry City have announced the signing of Manchester City youngster Josh Wilson-Esbrand on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old left-back has featured twice for Pep Guardiola's first team this season. This is his first loan move away from the club.

Arsenal youngster joins Wigan

Arsenal youngster Miguel Azeez has joined Wigan Athletic on loan.

Azeez had been on loan with UD Ibiza in the Spanish second tier, but after being recalled he has now joined the Latics, who are managed by former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.

Wolves reignite Dawson interest

Wolves have reportedly reignited their interest in West Ham defender Craig Dawson.

According to the Express and Star, the Midlands side are 'interested' in the Hammers star.

They were set to land him in the summer, but the deal to take him to Molineux fell through.

Liverpool given Bellingham tip

Former Liverpool star Don Hutchison has urged the Reds to offer Naby Keita as part of a swap deal for Jude Bellingham.

"Now it's panic stations. You have to make sure, you don't just panic. Even if you can do all the work behind the scenes. Speaking to Jude Bellingham's mum and dad. Speaking to Dortmund," he told ESPN.

"Speaking to the player. Trying to be cute and offer maybe a Naby Keita to Dortmund, or whatever you see fit. But they have got to make sure that they don't just panic."

Weghorst move blasted

Former Real Madrid star Wesley Sneijder has blasted Manchester United's move for Wout Weghorst.

"Surely not. I would find that very strange," he told Veronica Offside when asked how serious he believed the Red Devils were about signing Weghorst.

"I think they've seen the trick with the free kick [in the quarter-final of the World Cup against Argentina], so they don't fall for that in England anymore. In terms of striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don't think so.

"They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can't be true. They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can't be true."

Chelsea eye Mudryk alternative

Chelsea are reportedly interested in PSV star Noni Madueke as an alternative to Mudryk this season.

The Blues are eyeing a move for the Arsenal target but negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk have been slow. As a result, they have been forced to look elsewhere with the former Tottenham academy star among the contenders to arrive in January according to football.london.

Wolves eye Wan-Bissaka

Despite his impressive renaissance at Old Trafford over recent weeks, right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could still be set to leave Man Utd this winter.

His former club Crystal Palace were originally linked with a swoop for his services on-loan, whilst Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers are now apparently interested. According to Foot Mercato, Wolves are eyeing the Englishman ahead of a loan offer.

United are reportedly inclined to accept.
