Tottenham sack Jose Mourinho with club down in seventh in Premier League - Mirror Online

mirror.co.uk, 19 April 2021, 09:23
Spurs made the shock announcement on Monday after their 2-2 draw with Everton on Friday evening left their hopes of a top four finish in tatters

Tottenham Hotspur have sensationally sacked manager Jose Mourinho.

The move comes after they drew 2-2 with Everton on Friday evening, leaving them down in seventh place in the table.

Former Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason and the ex-Charlton and Huddersfield boss Chris Powell have been placed in temporary charge.

Mourinho was appointed as Tottenham manager in November 2019, a day after the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

He guided them to sixth place in the table by the end of the campaign, but his style of football often didn't win him much acclaim from fans.

Coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have also been dismissed.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: "Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.

"Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

"He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution."

Tottenham have struggled at time in the Premier League this season, and embarrassingly exited the Europa League at the last-16 stage after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

However they will take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final next weekend as they search for their first trophy in 13 years.

Julian Nagelsmann is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Mourinho at White Hart Lane. But the RB Leipzig coach is also Bayern Munich's No.1 target to replace Hansi Flick if he leaves the Allianz Arena this summer.

Flick announced at the weekend that he wanted to leave Bayern, but the club are insisting that they have not accepted his resignation and may still look to keep him in place for the 2021-22 season.

The news comes after Spurs became one of the six Premier League clubs to sign up to play in a new European Super League, with the plans condemned by supporters, although the sacking is not thought to be linked to the plans.

A statement on the plans from the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust read: "Yesterday, the current Board of THFC betrayed the Club, its history and the magic that makes this game so special when they put their name to a statement announcing the formation of a breakaway European Super League.

"This statement, signed by self-appointed "leading clubs", was put out late on a Sunday night. It was made not only after no consultation with supporters, but in the face of clearly stated opposition to key parts of the announcement.

"We have always tried to maintain a pragmatic position of engagement with the Board of THFC, even under the most trying of circumstances. But enough is enough.

"The current Board is prepared to risk the Club's reputation and its future in the opportunistic pursuit of greed. One of England's most famous clubs could find itself expelled from English league competition. Its players could be banned from international competition.

"And yet the current owners - mere custodians of a 139-year-old institution - are prepared to risk it all for avarice and self-aggrandisement.

"We demand the Board immediately disassociates itself from the breakaway league.

"Only then can meaningful discussions about change take place. If the Board does not do this, we will have no choice but to call on new owners prepared to safeguard the past, present and future of our great Club to step forward and work with us."
