Top 10 World Cup final goals of all time

sportsmole.co.uk, 17 December 2022, 11:44
The eyes of the world will be on Lusail Stadium on Sunday, as Argentina take on France in the final of the 2022 World Cup.

Argentina will be looking to win the competition for the third time in their history, with their last success coming back in 1986.

Meanwhile, France, who are the reigning champions following their victory four years ago in Russia, will also be aiming to become world champions for the third time.

There have been some brilliant goals in World Cup finals down the years, and with that in mind, Sports Mole picks out our top 10 greatest goals from the showpiece event.

10. Zinedine Zidane (France) vs. Italy (2006)

A penalty has surprisingly made it onto the top 10 list, but this was no ordinary spot kick.

Indeed, Zinedine Zidane sent France ahead in the seventh minute of the 2006 final against Italy with a Panenka.

Facing up to one of the best goalkeepers of all time in Gianluigi Buffon, Zidane showed nerves of steel to clip the ball down the middle, although the ball only just dropped over the line.

Zidane was later sent off for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi, and Italy went on to win 5-3 on penalties after the two teams could not be separated at the end of extra-time.

9. Andres Iniesta (Spain) vs. Netherlands (2010)

Spain won the 2010 World Cup courtesy of a strike from Andres Iniesta in the 116th minute.

The move started in the right-back position, and while La Roja needed some breaks along the way, with Holland doing their best to clear their lines, it was still a good move from Spain at that stage of the contest.

The finish from Iniesta was excellent, meanwhile, with the legendary midfielder managing to drill the ball into the bottom corner on the half-volley to spark jubilant scenes inside the stadium.

8. Emmanuel Petit (France) vs. Brazil (1998)

Emmanuel Petit's goal for France against Brazil in the final of the 1998 competition is often overlooked, but there is no question that it is deserving of a spot on this list.

It was a brilliant team goal from the Blues, with Christophe Dugarry and Patrick Vieira both heavily involved, and Petit went from defending in his own penalty box to calmly finding the back of the net following a swift break.

France were already two goals ahead at the time, but Petit's goal was still very memorable.

7. Jorge Burruchaga (Argentina) vs. West Germany (1986)

Diego Maradona's magical pass into Jorge Burruchaga is arguably the best part of this goal, but it was still a brilliant finish from the attacker, and it also proved to be the winning effort.

Indeed, West Germany had fought back from two goals behind to level the scores at 2-2 heading into the final exchanges of the final in 1986.

Burruchaga's goal was the difference, though, and he showed nerves of steel to calmly find the back of the net while running at great speed and being chased down.

6. Silvio Piola (Italy) vs. Hungary (1938)

Italy triumphed in the 1938 World Cup final courtesy of a 4-2 victory over Hungary in Paris.

Silvio Piola scored twice for Italy, while Gino Colaussi also came up with a brace, as Gil Azzurri retained the World Cup trophy following their success in 1934.

Piola's first of the match was brilliant, with the Italians showing patience inside the penalty box before the ball was worked into the forward, who picked out the back of the net.

5. Mario Tardelli (Italy) vs. West Germany (1982)

Mario Tardelli sent Italy two goals ahead in the final of the 1982 World Cup against West Germany with a brilliant goal in the 69th minute.

West Germany were caught short at the back due to the counter-attack, but Italy took their time before having a shot on goal, with the Blues showing patience in a forward area before Tardelli took matters into his own hands.

Italy went on to score a third in the 81st minute through Alessandro Altobelli, with Paul Breitner's late goal for West Germany only proving to be a consolation.

4. Gerson (Brazil) vs. Italy (1970)

Gerson's strike from the 1970 World Cup final was overshadowed by Alberto's in the final stages, but it deserves to be placed high on this list when considering the context.

Indeed, Brazil were level with Italy at 1-1 when Gerson found the back of the net, and it was a brilliant effort from the midfielder, who worked space outside the box before expertly finding the bottom corner.

It was a huge blow to Italy at such a crucial stage of the match, and the goal allowed the South Americans to go on and claim the trophy, scoring twice more through Jairzinho and then Alberto.

3. Geoff Hurst (England) vs. West Germany (1966)

There simply had to be a spot high up the list for Geoff Hurst's goal against West Germany in 1966.

England won 4-2 to lift the trophy, with Hurst scoring a spectacular hat trick for the Three Lions.

Hurst completed his treble in the final moments with a stunning strike into the top corner, and the famous commentary from Kenneth Wolstenholme that accompanied it made the moment even more memorable.

2. Pele (Brazil) vs. Sweden (1958)

Brazil's final with Sweden in 1958 still holds the record for the most goals scored in a World Cup final, with the South American nation running out 5-2 winners.

Pele's first of the match came in the 55th minute, when he controlled the ball inside the penalty area before lifting it over the defender and finishing into the bottom corner.

It was spectacular goal from a 17-year-old, and it will forever be remembered as an iconic goal in World Cup history.

1. Carlos Alberto (Brazil) vs. Italy (1970)

This was always going to be first on the list, with Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil in the final of the 1970 World Cup one of the best goals in the history of the competition, let alone the final.

Brazil recorded a 4-1 win over Italy to lift the trophy, and their final goal arrived in the 86th minute through Alberto.

Seven outfield Brazilian players were involved in the move before the right-back was released by Pele, and he picked out the bottom corner with a stunning strike.
