Three problems Dybala brings to Liverpool as Klopp eyes free transfer

mirror.co.uk, 5 February 2022, 05:00
Liverpool are one of several Premier League teams looking to snap Paulo Dybala up on a free transfer with his Juventus contract expiring at the end of the season

Liverpool might be enticed by the fact that Paulo Dybala could be available for free in the summer.

In fact, they have been reportedly offered his services by the striker's agent, as he looks to leave Juventus at the end of the season.

The Argentine's contract is due to expire in July and negotiations have been called off with the Italian giants.

Despite a verbal agreement before Christmas, Juve altered the terms of the deal - which was roundly rejected by Dybala.

It has left the forward feeling alienated and it all points towards a Turin exit for the player dubbed "La Joya".

And Liverpool have registered an interest but the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have also been contacted.

The 28-year-old's situation is set to be a major summer saga while clubs across Europe are also keen on the former Palermo star.

But while Dybala's situation might be enticing - it could also be a car crash decision for Liverpool - here's why.

Salah contract blow

Nothing in this world is free so when Dybala's contract expires at the end of the season, he would not join a club 'for nothing' despite the colloquial use of the term.

The absence of a transfer fee would only be replaced by a signing-on fee - an amount of money due to the player and agent for negotiating a deal.

That could range between anywhere depending on the options on the table with Dybala's situation set to spark a bidding war with so many clubs interest.

For Liverpool, that could be dangerous as they look to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract as the Reds operate on a smaller budget to the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

It means that they will likely have to prioritise whether they want to tie their star man down to the club or splash out on the wantaway Juve ace.

Selection crisis

Having too many attackers might not sound like a huge problem but when they include several who would expect to be key players then some cracks begin to show.

Adding Dybala to a mixture of forwards that already includes Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi and new signing Luis Diaz is a recipe for disaster.

Klopp could be unnecessarily risking the sanctity of his dressing room by doing so while also give the youngsters at the club reason to be concerned.

With some young starlets coming through such as Kaide Gordon and Harvey Elliott, bringing in another player to start ahead of them might just make them think about leaving.

And with Dybala aged 28, by the time his powers wane, those that had been tipped to become a success have already left for somewhere else.

Questionable form

Dybala is not the same pocket rocket dynamo he was six or seven years ago when he took Serie A by storm.

In the three seasons after signing for Juventus from Palermo in 2015, the Argentina international scored 68 times.

The following four years would reap just 43 goals and he netted just four times in Serie A last season.

Should Liverpool sign Paulo Dybala? Comment below

A change of scenery would certainly benefit Dybala, but would it be the best option for Liverpool? It would be a gamble.

And Klopp could be doing without trying to rekindle another player's career when the Reds are trying to match City in the Premier League.

While the German coach is brilliant at getting the best out of his forwards, finding a style to suit the forward might force others to drop out.
