Thomas Tuchel has already explained how Chelsea can solve £50m transfer problem

Timo Werner's arrival in west London last summer was greeted with excitement among Chelsea fans, the German forward doing enough for former side RB Leipzig for the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to part ways with around £48m for his services.

However, his debut season at Chelsea hardly went to plan - the striker bagging just six Premier League goals all campaign - missing a number of notable chances in the process.

Fast forward a season and Werner's performances have left so much to be desired that Chelsea have decided against going into the current campaign with the German international as their leading man, instead favouring a £98m move for Romelu Lukaku - who has taken to life back at the club with incredible ease.

The Belgian has scoured four goals in four games this season, rendering Werner to as little as an afterthought in the minds of some Chelsea fans - so captivated are they in Lukaku's form.

However, £48m is a fee no club can scoff at - not even one as wealthy as Chelsea's, so it is on Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, along with Werner himself, to play his way back into the fold.

The Chelsea manager has even taken the liberty of signposting what the striker must do to become an integral part of his plans once again - recapture the kind of clinical nature that made him so lethal at Leipzig.

Following a pre-season fixture away at Arsenal, in which Werner struggled to impress yet again, Tuchel shed light on what he expects of the striker if he is to revive his flat-lining Chelsea career.

"Nothing has changed so far. He had a so-so Euros with Germany, but that was a concern of the whole team not his personal problem.

"Now it's on him. Like always it's on him to show his quality and his ability.

"It's very hard to have a first match, first 45 minutes after a tough week that we put into the players, to play on this kind of level."

As is often the case with Werner, the 25-year-old found himself in threating positions time and time again at the Emirates, but failed to convert.

"I am happy that he was dangerous but there were some chances where he could be more decisive, [he] could have scored could have assisted another one or two.

"It is a bit the same, like in the last games, but like I said, we have just started and it is not the moment to blame."

The message was a rally cry for Werner to find his shooting boots, but as things stand the forward is without a goal contribution in all three of his appearances this season.
