Madrid currently lead the Spanish league jointly with Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad and have made a strong start to the campaign.
It has been a different story for Carlo Ancelotti's side in the Champions League with the 13-time winners suffering a shock defeat to minnows Sheriff.
Madrid had a mixed summer in the transfer market with Sergio Ramos joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
They raked in close to £70million in player sales as Raphael Varane and Martin Odegaard joined Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.
Their main incomings were David Alaba on a free from Bayern Munich while they paid close to £28million for highly-rated France teenager Eduardo Camavinga.
They made two huge bids for Kylian Mbappe, but PSG were unwilling to entertain any offers for their star man despite him entering the final year of his contract.
Next summer could be a huge transfer window for the club with some of the best talent around Europe joining.
Kylian Mbappe
As it stands, Mbappe will leave PSG on a free transfer in the summer and Real Madrid are in pole position to sign him.
The 22-year-old confirmed that he did ask to leave the Ligue 1 club, but his request was denied.
"I asked to leave, because from the moment I did not want to extend, I wanted the club to have a transfer fee to have a quality replacement," Mbappe told RMC Sport.
Madrid president Florentino Perez has hinted something could be done in January, when the player would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.
Perez told Spanish paper El Debate: "In January we will have news on Mbappe.
"Hopefully, everything can be sorted on January 1."
Paul Pogba
Pogba is another player who Madrid could pick up on a free transfer next summer.
The Red Devils want a final decision to be made over his future by Christmas to avoid the situation hanging over them for the rest of the season, when it is hoped they will be fighting for trophies.
Spanish publication AS claim Pogba has returned to Madrid's radar 'with force' and they have been sounding out the France World Cup winner for several weeks.
The reports also add that they hope Pogba can convince Kylian Mbappe to join him at Madrid.
Raheem Sterling
Sterling's comments in the press has fuelled speculation over his future admitting he would like more game time.
He also said he would be open to a move abroad, which has led to Madrid being linked with his signature.
Speaking at the FT Business of Sport US Summit on Thursday evening, Sterling said: "If there was the opportunity to go somewhere else [for more game time], I would be open to it at this moment in time.
"As I said, football is the most important thing to me - challenges that I have set myself from a young age and dreams as well, to play abroad.
"As an English player all I know is the Premier League and I have always had something down [in me] that maybe one day I would love to play abroad to see how I would come up against that challenge."
Sterling's preference to play abroad should he leave the Etihad has seen Real Madrid installed as his most likely destination.
Los Blancos, who have been interested in a deal for the winger in previous summers, have emerged as 4/1 favourites to land the 26-year-old.
