Solskjaer's 10-minute gesture to Man Utd fans after Liverpool drubbing

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer endured his "darkest day" as Manchester United boss during the 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool - but still took the time to engage with fans after the game.

The Norwegian is in the midst of intense scrutiny surrounding his future as manager of United after the recent run of poor performances came to a head against their most fierce rivals.

Liverpool ran riot at Old Trafford - becoming the first side in Premier League history to go in at half-time 4-0 up at the 'theatre of dreams'.

The result is the latest low in a series of underwhelming displays that have seen United lose three of their last four league outings to Aston Villa, LeicesterCity and Liverpool with a 1-1 draw at home to Everton wedged in between.

In that run, United have conceded eleven and scored just three, leading to many sections of the Red Devils fanbase to call for the manager's head.

Those inside the stadium however, were for the most part firmly behind Solskjaer - the boos at full-time nowhere near as loud as many would have expected, though that may be down to a number of fans having already left.

As the Norwegian's coaching credentials are called into question - his character can not be disputed given he gave up his time after the game to engage with fans of all ages outside the ground, when many would have headed straight home and avoid the glares of disappointed fans.

Despite overseeing the worst result in United's recent history, Solskjaer took the time to sign items and pose for pictures with fans who appeared to be in high sprits regardless of the disastrous showing on the pitch.

The United boss was in a defiant mood after the game, conceding that though the afternoon is a painful one - things can only get better.

"We know we are rock bottom; we can't feel any worse than this. Let's see where we take it," Solskjaer explained Sky Sports.

"I have come too far; we have come too far as a group. We are too close to give up now.

"It is not easy to say something apart from it is the darkest day I have had leading these players.

"We were not good enough individually and as a team - you can't give a team like Liverpool those chances, but unfortunately we did.

"The whole performance was not good enough. We created openings, they had chances and they have been clinical. The third goal decided the game."

The result leaves United languishing as low as seventh - eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.

Given the significant financial backing Solskjaer received in the summer, many tipped United for the league - yet they appear to be out of the title race by October.
