Shevchenko eyeing managerial job in Britain after Ukraine's Euro 2020 exploits

mirror.co.uk, 3 October 2021, 10:41

Andriy Shevchenko is looking to land a managerial role in the UK after leaving his job with Ukraine.

The 45-year-old is keen to get back into work and would have no visa issues working on British soil having had a base in England for years.

Shevchenko is a free agent and the top agency he works with have already begun making noises to find out about potential vacancies.

The Ukrainian's only job thus far has been his five-year stint in charge of the national side.

Now he hopes his reputation will help him land a role as he looks to further his managerial career.

Would he get a job in the UK?

Celtic have been touted as a potential role, reports The Sun.

The Scottish side hired Ange Postecoglou in the summer but he has endured a difficult start to life in Glasgow and it remains to be seen how much patience the Scottish side have.

Elsewhere clubs in the Premier League have been prepared to take punts on well known names, even if their CVs still have question marks.

Crystal Palace hired Patrick Vieira in the summer whilst Manchester United have stuck by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose reputation and history with the club has been seen as a plus by the board.

Arsenal recruited Mikel Arteta almost two years ago despite him never having had a top job before.

The Spaniard previously played with the north London club and his education under Pep Guardiola was enough for the Gunners to take a punt.

Major clubs around Europe have also been prepared to back a big name even if they lack experience, as has been seen with Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane.

What's his managerial CV like?

Shevchenko's stint as Ukraine boss spanned five years, but is his only experience in the dugout thus far.

He won 25 of his 52 games as the national's teams boss.

The 2004 Ballon d'Or winner led the Ukraine to the last eight of Euro 2020, where they eventually lost to England.

Nevertheless it was their best performance at the European Championships.

Prior to that he had failed to guide them to the 2018 World Cup after finishing below Iceland and Croatia in qualifying.

Upon leaving his post he said: " I spent five years with the National team. It was hard work that proved that we are capable of playing modern football.

"I am grateful to the president and the executive committee of the UAF for the opportunity to work with the Ukrainian National team.

"I am thankful to every player, every person who helped and was involved in the team."
