Sergi Roberto has signed a new Barcelona contract that runs until 2023. The 30-year-old Catalan, whose contract was set to expire in June, has extended his stay for another season.
The player went to the Camp Nou this Friday afternoon to sign the new deal. The deal has a release clause set at 400 million euros.
"I'm very happy," Sergi Roberto said to Barcelona's own media channels. "Xavi told me to put my injury behind me and have the operation and from the first moment he showed me his confidence in me.
"I will repay his confidence with results on the pitch. I've been at this club for half my life and I hope to enjoy it again and bring joy back to the fans.
"We all have to be united and do our bit. I have already done that. And now I have to work and give 100 percent."
The versatile player has had to significantly reduce his salary, like almost all of the club's players, in order to stay at Camp Nou.
Sergi Roberto made the leap to the first team in the 2010/11 season under Pep Guardiola, and has only ever worn one first-team shirt in his career. He has made 316 appearances.
Injuries
Sergi Roberto has endured an injury ordeal this past season and had to undergo surgery last December.
He only managed to take part in 12 matches, between LaLiga Santander and the Champions League, missing as many as 37 games due to fitness concerns.
Xavi Hernandez's insistence on his continuity was a key factor to the renewal.
The player had other offers, but he has always been clear to him that he wanted to continue his career at what he sees to be his home.
