Scotland's World Cup playoff vs Ukraine set for delay after Ceferin steps in

Scotland's upcoming World Cup qualifier against Ukraine has been postponed until June under the order of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin according to Shakhtar Donetsk's director of football Darijo Srna.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at Hampden Park in just over a fortnight before Ukraine officially requested a postponement given the harrowing scenes witnessed in their country as a result of Russia's invasion.

UEFA and FIFA are planning to make an announcement on both Scotland's game with Ukraine and Wales' clash against Austria in the coming days given the winners of each were expected to face off for a place in the World Cup later this year.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had faced criticism for his lack of action, though a short statement was released confirming further information would be available soon.

"FIFA expresses its deepest solidarity to everybody affected by what is happening in Ukraine," said a spokesperson. "A further update will be provided in due course."

Ceferin has already allowed a number of Ukrainian players as well as foreign stars based in the country to reside in his home country of Slovenia.

It is thought that Srna reached out to Ceferin for guidance when it came to ensuring all players based in Ukraine were safe.

He has since revealed that Ceferin has decided to delay Scotland's contest with Ukraine until the summer.

Srna explained: "I spoke with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin again today. He has stood up for Ukrainian football.

"I understand that no one cares about football now, but he told me that the match between Ukraine and Scotland will be postponed to June.

"In addition, there will be a special transfer window set up to allow players based in Ukraine a temporary transfer to allow them to get back playing football.

"I contacted him when war broke out to ask for help. He personally helped to organise a train to get the players out of the country.

"He promised he would help the players and he has been as good as his word."
