Schweinsteiger explains why he's unimpressed with Man Utd and agrees with Klopp

Jurgen Klopp drew criticism for claiming that Liverpool "should have won" their game against Manchester United, despite losing 2-1 at Old Trafford and producing a severely under-par performance Schweinsteiger agreed with Klopp's controversial take after Man Utd beat Liverpool 2-1

Rarely do you find a former Manchester United player and current Liverpool manager agreeing with each other, but that's what Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jurgen Klopp find themselves doing.

After losing a pulsating encounter between the two clubs 2-1 at Old Trafford on Monday, Klopp reckoned that his Liverpool should have won the game" - a claim that sounds "ridiculous" by his own admission. But he's not alone in his controversial belief, as ex-United midfielder Schweinsteiger has now backed his German compatriot's opinion.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester in the wake of the epic victory for his old club, Bayern Munich legend Schweinsteiger - who spent 18 months with United during the twilight of his career - explained: "You know, of course, I support United and I'm very happy that they have won the match, but was it a great performance? In my opinion, if I compare it with other teams like the top teams in Europe, I wouldn't say so.

"For me, Liverpool was the better team actually. They had much more of the ball, possession and the game. But you know, United did one thing really well and that was they had the right attitude towards the game, the right spirit in the team and in my eyes the supporters actually won the match because it could've also been different."

Klopp left Old Trafford frustrated with the result and lamented Liverpool's sloppy start, which allowed Jadon Sancho to break the deadlock, but the Anfield boss believes "everything was on the table" for his team to win the game. "It was not 100 per cent clear what United would do, but that's how they started the game. Were they more aggressive than us in the beginning? Probably, yes.

"It was exactly the game United wanted to play and you can say that is our fault if you want. In the beginning there, it was wild, up and down and these kind of things and they had their chance when they hit the post. Then they scored the goal and then we took over, more or less. Until the final pass or final decision, we played like we should have played."

Klopp then bemoaned another early error, this time in the second half as Marcus Rashford doubled United's lead on the counter. "Then we conceded a second and that's not helpful. That obviously created a special atmosphere here. When we scored our goal, which I think we absolutely deserved in this game, it was slightly late," he admitted post-match.

"We had more moments where [David] de Gea, top saves, or they blocked our shots and these kind of things and these are the facts. It was 2-1 because time ran out and we had not the clear-cut chances in the last two or three minutes anymore because the watch just ran down without real football because of different situations."
