Schalke collected just their second win of the season on Wednesday, their 1-0 home triumph over Mainz allowing them to avoid getting cast further adrift at the foot of the table. Still, with just nine points on the board so far, and with outright safety already five points away, only wins will do for the Royal Blues if they are to avoid an immediate return to the second division. Injuries to key players including Rodrigo Zalzar, Thomas Ouwejan and Leo Greiml have not helped their cause, although the sight of last season's Bundesliga 2 top scorer Simon Terodde netting his third of this campaign in the win over Mainz will offer cause for optimism. That match was just the second time this term that Schalke have kept a clean sheet; a leaky defence has been their undoing for most of this campaign, with three or more goals conceded five times already.
Bayern, by way of contrast, come into this game with their chests puffed, having recovered from a minor wobble in September to reclaim top spot after putting together an unbeaten run of 12 matches in all competitions, including wins in their last nine in which they have averaged over four goals per game. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has established himself in the starting line-up over that period by finding the net regularly, and he is set to begin once more against his former club, especially in light of the leg injury that will keep Mane on the sidelines. Leroy Sane should begin in his place after coming off the bench and impressing in the 6-1 win over Werder Bremen on Tuesday, while the ongoing absence of Alphonso Davies at left-back means Lucas Hernandez will fill in for the Canadian star, with Benjamin Pavard shifting to centre-back and Noussair Mazraoui at right-back.

Match stats
Yoshida has started every single match for Schalke this season since signing from Sampdoria.
Despite being bottom, Schalke already have two more points to their name after 14 matches of the season than they did at the halfway stage of their 2020/21 season (seven points after 17 matches).
Schalke are winless in their last 21 matches against Bayern, taking only three draws in that torrid period.
Choupo-Moting may be in fine scoring form (with five goals in his past five Bundesliga games) but he is yet to find the net in eight career appearances against Schalke.
Jamal Musiala is set to make his 100th competitive appearance for Bayern. A teenager has never before achieved this milestone for the record champions.
Bayern's combined goal difference in their past four encounters with Schalke is a whopping 20-0 in their favour.
