Japanese veteran Yoshida almost guided Schalke to a point in the Revierderby against Borussia Dortmund, but the Royal Blues lost 1-0 after conceding late on in the Matchday 7 encounter. That meant Frank Kramer's promoted side stayed on six points, so they will be keen to get their second league win of the season this weekend. Swiss right-back Cedric Brunner was eased back to training this week, but three-goal attacker Marius Bülter, midfielder Florent Mollet and left-back Thomas Ouwejan all missed some sessions due to illness. It remains to be seen if they will recover in time for Sunday.
Augsburg earned a famous win over Bayern Munich in their last outing, with Berisha pouncing for the only goal in the second half. Left-back Iago has had a niggle since that game, but returned to training this week. That means Enrico Maaßen should be able to name an unchanged team for the trip to Gelsenkirchen, with the mid-table visitors out to claim their fourth win of the campaign and third in a row. Midfielder Niklas Dorsch is nearing a return to action, meanwhile, but it seems that England U20 cap Reece Oxford will remain out through injury for the foreseeable future.
Match stats
Former Sampdoria and Southampton defender Yoshida has started all seven matches for Schalke in his first season in the Bundesliga.
After beating Bochum 3-1, Kramer's team are hoping to chalk up their second consecutive success at home.
One of the three Bundesliga wins the Royal Blues managed in the 2020/21 season came at home to Augsburg in April 2021. During that campaign they collected only 16 points - four of them against Sunday's visitors - on their way to being relegated.
Berisha got his first goal of the season against Bayern. It was also the first goal he has scored for Augsburg since joining on loan from Turkish side Fenerbahce on 31 August.
Augsburg had lost all three of their home games before beating the defending champions on Matchday 7. They have won two from three on their travels.
Coming into this round of fixtures the visitors were the joint-lowest goalscorers in the league (five goals). After losing four of their first five games and conceding 10 times during that run, they have won each of their last two games on a 1-0 scoreline.
