Saturday's League One predictions including Portsmouth vs. Reading

sportsmole.co.uk, 17 February 2024, 06:50
Bolton vs. Charlton (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Bolton Wanderers will attempt to claim a second straight win when they play host to relegation-threatened Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

The Trotters head into the weekend in third position in the League One table, while the visitors are currently languishing in 20th position.

We say: Bolton Wanderers 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Bolton have won four of their last five home league games, and we think they will claim another home victory on Saturday, especially as they have won each of their previous five head-to-head meetings with Charlton.

Carlisle vs. Cambridge (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Carlisle United will be hoping to bring an end to a wretched run of form in League One when they face off against Cambridge United at Brunton Park on Saturday evening.

The hosts are favourites to be relegated this season, having managed just 20 points from 31 league matches, while the visitors are still uncomfortably close to the dotted line with 35 points in 30 league games.

We say: Carlisle United 1-1 Cambridge United

While Carlisle have lost four of their last five home games, it is worth pointing out that three of those defeats were against teams in the top six this season. With just two wins on the road, Cambridge's away record is far from solid, and we feel that they will have to settle for a share of the spoils in this one.

Cheltenham vs. Port Vale (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Darren Moore will take charge of his first game as Port Vale boss when his side take on relegation rivals Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

The Valiants are currently languishing in 21st place in the League One table, while the Robins are two points worse off in 22nd position.

We say: Cheltenham Town 1-1 Port Vale

Moore will be keen to begin his tenure with a victory over a relegation rival, but the visitors may have to settle for a point against a Cheltenham side that has lost just one of their last five home matches.

Derby vs. Stevenage (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to continue their positive run of form, promotion-chasing Derby County will welcome playoff hopefuls Stevenage to Pride Park on Saturday afternoon in League One.

The Rams secured a convincing success at Exeter City last time out, while the Boro were narrow losers at home against Bristol Rovers on the same night.

We say: Derby County 2-0 Stevenage

Derby flexed their attacking power in the win at Exeter on Tuesday night, and we believe that it could be a similar tale at Pride Park this weekend.

Stevenage's confidence would have taken a massive hit after wasting a two-goal lead last time out, with Pride Park not a likely place for the Boro to get back to winning ways.

Fleetwood vs. Barnsley (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two sides with contrasting League One ambitions this season will face off this weekend when Fleetwood Town take on Barnsley at Highbury Stadium on Saturday evening.

The hosts are in the midst of the relegation scrap, currently in 23rd place with 26 points after 32 matches, while the visitors are fourth in the league standings with 57 points in 31 matches.

We say: Fleetwood Town 1-2 Barnsley

While Fleetwood have shown signs of improvement lately, they have struggled against the better teams in the league and lost to each of the top three sides in the last two months. Barnsley have a very good record in this fixture, and we feel they will extend their unbeaten run against this opponent with another win in this match.

Leyton Orient vs. Burton Albion (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Seeking to maintain their 100% home record in 2024, Leyton Orient welcome Burton Albion to the Gaughan Group Stadium in round 34 of the League One on Saturday.

Martin Paterson's men head into the weekend fresh off the back of picking up their first league win on the road since October and will be looking to build on that result.

We say: Leyton Orient 3-1 Burton Albion

Leyton Orient turned in an attacking show of class in midweek and will head into Saturday's game with sky-high confidence. While Burton will be looking to build on their win over Bristol Rovers, they have struggled to get going on the road, and we fancy the Os claiming all three points in front of their home supporters.

Lincoln vs. Exeter (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Separated by just three points in the League One standings, mid-table foes Lincoln City and Exeter City square off at the LNER Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Skubala's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Charlton Athletic last time out, while their visitors were no match for Derby County, suffering a 3-0 reverse to the Rams.

We say: Lincoln City 1-1 Exeter City

A Lincoln unit renowned for keeping things tight at the back will welcome the visit of one of League One's least prolific attacking contingents, although Exeter have often found their best shooting boots away from home rather than at St James Park.

Three of the last four meetings between the two sides have ended in a 1-1 draw, and a contest as close as the table would suggest should also unfold on Saturday, where another low-scoring stalemate is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Northampton vs. Bristol Rovers (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Northampton Town and Bristol Rovers meet at Sixfields for a mid-table clash in League One on Saturday.

Both clubs were involved in highly-dramatic encounters in midweek, which had differing fortunes for the two.

We say: Northampton Town 2-2 Bristol Rovers

With virtually nothing to separate the sides in the league table, a close encounter is likely between two teams marooned in mid-table.

Despite not drawing any of their previous 13 league games, Rovers may have found their match here, and the two could cancel each other in another entertaining affair.

Peterborough vs. Blackpool (Saturday, 3.00pm)

A stuttering Peterborough United will be hoping to return to winning ways in League One when they face Blackpool at Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Owing to their poor run of form, the hosts have slipped to fifth place in the league standings with 56 points after 31 matches, while the visitors are ninth with 47 points over the same period.

We say: Peterborough United 2-1 Blackpool

Despite Peterborough's dip in form of late, they have continued to score goals with relative ease, and we fancy them to outscore the visitors, who have found victories on the road very difficult to come by this season.

Portsmouth vs. Reading (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Portsmouth will attempt to claim a fourth consecutive victory in all competitions when they welcome Reading to Fratton Park for Saturday's League One encounter.

Meanwhile, the visitors will be looking to continue their fine run of form after avoiding defeat in their last six matches.

We say: Portsmouth 2-1 Reading

Reading have proven to be a tough team to beat in recent times, but we think they may fall just short against the league leaders, who will be in a confident mood after winning each of their last three matches.

Shrewsbury vs. Wigan (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Wigan Athletic will be bidding to bounce back from successive defeats in League One when they continue their campaign away to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors will enter this match off the back of a 4-2 defeat at Oxford United, while Shrewsbury held high-flying Barnsley to a 1-1 draw in their last game in England's third tier.

We say: Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Wigan Athletic

This is a tough match to call, and we have had to settle on a draw this weekend. Shrewsbury are in the better form, but Wigan have a lot of quality in their squad, and we are expecting a tight match to finish all square.

Wycombe vs. Oxford Utd (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to bounce back from defeat last time out, relegation-threatened Wycombe Wanderers will welcome top-six hopefuls Oxford United to Adam's Park on Saturday afternoon in League One.

The Chairboys lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers during their most-recent fixture, while the U's promotion charge was boosted by a 4-2 success against Wigan Athletic.

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 2-3 Oxford United

Having netted 11 goals in their last three home matches, Wycombe will be confident of another positive result at their Buckinghamshire home this weekend.

Oxford returned to winning ways in style on Tuesday night, and we feel that the U's will make it back-to-back successes on Saturday afternoon.
