Ronaldo's 'four-word blast' at Man Utd stars in Solskjaer intervention

mirror.co.uk, 23 October 2021, 06:51

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a four-word blast to his stunned Manchester United team-mates at half-time of their Champions League win over Atalanta.

And in a remarkable insight into where the power lies in the Red Devils dressing room, Bruno Fernandes also reportedly demanded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer make a key tactical change.

It had been a disastrous first-half for United, who found themselves 2-0 down at Old Trafford after goals from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral.

Having seen his side win just two of their previous seven games heading into the Group F clash, Solskjaer was coming under increasing pressure.

It appears that he got a helping hand on Wednesday night as he looked to turn around his side's fortunes against their Serie A opponents.

Is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the right man to manage Manchester United? Comment below.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave his Manchester United team-mates the hairdryer treatment against Atalanta

According to The Sun, the United dressing room had descended into a group of feuding players, with Solskjaer attempting to calm the situation.

But it is said that it was Ronaldo who took charge and delivered a hairdryer team talk worthy of legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo reportedly addressed the whole team and blasted their performance as 'unacceptable'.

The Portuguese superstar is said to have then asked his fellow United stars 'Are you not ashamed?' and made it clear the performance was far below what is expected of the Red Devils.

Following his four-word blast, Ronaldo then warned the United squad that if they did not complete a famous comeback, their future in the Champions League was at stake.

Solskjaer then took control of the team talk back from Ronaldo and insisted his side could still win the game if they got the first goal after the break.

Before returning to the pitch though, The Sun report that Fernandes demanded Solskjaer change his tactics.

Fernandes lined up in the central attacking midfield role as Solskjaer returned to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the visit of Gian Piero Gasperini's men.

But it is claimed that the Portuguese midfielder demanded that he be allowed to drop deeper in order to get on the ball more.

The interventions of Ronaldo and Fernandes appear to have worked perfectly for Solskjaer and United.

Fernandes provided the assist for Marcus Rashford's strike early in the second-half, which got the Red Devils back in the game.

Harry Maguire then fired in from substitute Edinson Cavani's cross to equalise for the hosts.

Nine minutes from time, Ronaldo completed a stunning comeback win for the Red Devils when he headed in Luke Shaw's cross.

Though questions have still been asked of Solskjaer, it has given the Norwegian some breathing space heading into Sunday's visit of Liverpool.

But Fernandes insisted that improvements have to be made from both the players and the coaching staff.

"We have a lot to improve on and the coach also knows there has to be some improvement at their end but that is part of football," he said.

"Every day we are learning something new. But football is the present and it's the now. We fully support him. He's our manager, we follow his ideas and believe in them."
