Ronaldo 'major doubt' vs Palace amid fears celebration resulted in injury

New Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick could be without Cristiano Ronaldo for his first game in the Old Trafford dugout amid injury fears surrounding the 36-year-old striker

Cristiano Ronaldo is a major doubt for Ralf Rangnick's first game as Manchester United boss.

The Portuguese star is suffering with a knee issue and could miss Sunday's clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was hauled off in the latter stages of his side's 3-2 win against Arsenal on Thursday night.

He scored a brace, including the winner from the penalty spot, but there are concerns that a knee injury may have been sustained when the 36-year-old did his trademark 'Siu' celebration, reports the Sun.

Ronaldo was able to play on after celebrating before he was taken off.

He was still able to run down the tunnel following his withdrawal.

A weekend absence would be a blow to Rangnick however, who is looking to get off to the best possible start and quash any ideas that Ronaldo cannot fit into his plans.

The German is known for his high-press, high energy philosophy that, on recent evidence, does not look to benefit a veteran Ronaldo.

Nevertheless the new United boss was full of praise for the 36-year-old having watched the Arsenal win from the stands.

He said: "You always have to adapt your style or your idea of football to the players you have available, not visa versa.

"Having seen Cristiano against Arsenal in the second half at the age of 36, he is an amazing top professional.

"At his age, I've never seen a player who is still that physically fit. He's still a player who can easily make the difference.

"So yes, it's about how we can develop the whole team, not only Cristiano. We play in the most competitive league in the world so we need all the players on board.

"What I saw from Cristiano, he is more than willing to do that, to put his input into the team. His team-mates will have to do the same."

If Ronaldo is absent then it may open doors for another of his teammates to make a positive early impression.

Anthony Martial appeared from the bench on Thursday whilst Marcus Rashford would also be capable of filling in.

Mason Greenwood is also an option for Rangnick, whose first starting XI may provide clues as to who will benefit from his arrival.

The German has already confessed that he won't have much time to train with his side prior to Sunday's clash.

He said: "I cannot do a lot with the players that played against Arsenal because I need to make sure that they have enough power and fuel in the tanks for the game on Sunday, so physically we cannot really train.

"So, the only way to help them and to give them an input is mentally obviously, with regard to energy."
