Robert Lewandowski scores 35th goal as champions Bayern Munich held in Wolfsburg

bundesliga.com, 15 May 2022, 06:55
Max Kruse scored one and made another as Wolfsburg came from 2-0 down to draw with record champions Bayern Munich on the final weekend of 2021/22, in a game in which Robert Lewandowski netted his 35th Bundesliga goal of the campaign.

Wolfsburg 2-2 Bayern Munich

Goals: 0-1 Stanisic 17' (assist: Kimmich), 0-2 Lewandowski 40' (assist: Müller), 1-2 Wind 45' (assist: Kruse), 2-2 Kruse 58' (assist: Van de Ven)

Without a win in two since clinching their 10th successive Bundesliga title, Bayern started their final game of 2021/22 in ominous fashion. Jamal Musiala tested Koen Casteels with a shot from 18 yards, before the Wolfsburg stopper was called on to deny Leon Goretzka and Lewandowski. Maxence Lacroix headed a corner onto the woodwork against the run of play, but that only served to poke the Bayern bear. Josip Stanisic used his head to flick a Joshua Kimmich corner into the far corner for the opening goal, with Lewandowski following suit, applying another fine headed finish to Thomas Müller's cross.

Wolfsburg reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Jonas Wind's sweet turn and thunderous volley. Soon after the restart, they were level. Micky Van de Ven advanced unchecked, before crossing from the left for Kruse, who couldn't miss from close range. A sluggish Bayern responded in kind as Serge Gnabry fired narrowly over, his goal-bound shot taking a telling deflection on its way behind. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting shot wide and fellow substitute Leroy Sane flunked a late one-on-one as Bayern ended the season on a three-game winless run for the first time under Julian Nagelsmann.

Match stats

Bayern set a new record for single-season away goals (49).

Stanisic scored his first Bundesliga goal.

Lewandowski finished top scorer for the fifth season in a row, and seventh time overall. Thirty-five goals marks his second best single-season return as a Bundesliga player.

Müller topped the assists charts for the third time in four seasons (18).

Kruse finished the season as Wolfsburg's second highest scorer on seven goals - one behind Lukas Nmecha - despite only returning to the club at the end of January.

Brooks played his 216th and final competitive game for Wolfsburg.

Watch: Lewandowski: "It's amazing to be top scorer again!"
