Remote controlled car makes return before England vs Austria clash at Euro 2022

The mini-motor became an unlikely star of last summer's tournament as it delivered the match ball into the centre of the pitch ahead of the tournament opener between Italy and Switzerland.

We didn't see the Volskwagen come back until the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 which saw England suffer a heart-breaking defeat to Italy.

But the delightful toy is back in Blighty again as it made a well-received entrance ahead of England's Euro 2022 opener against Austria.

After delivering the ball to referee Marta Huerta de Aza in the centre circle of the Old Trafford pitch, the car, in the colours of the LGBTQ+ movement, was cheered off by the jubilant crowd.

Moments later, the referee blew the whistle to officially kick off the tournament with England going into these finals as one of the favourites to win.

England got off to a dream start as Arsenal forward Beth Mead poked the ball beyond Manuela Zinsberger on 16 minutes.

Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman, the players and fans had their heart in their mouths for a moment as goal-line technology was being assessed before Austria took kick-off. However, replays show the ball crucially went over the line.
