Real Madrid's top four transfer targets & state of play with huge spending plans

mirror.co.uk, 7 September 2021, 15:38

Real Madrid reportedly have huge spending plans after identifying their top four transfer targets.

Following a wild year in the Spanish capital that has seen president Florentino Perez try and fail in a bid to launch the European Super league, and captain Sergio Ramos depart in less than preferable circumstances, Los Blancos are looking to bounce back and reassert themselves as one of the world's best teams.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti is back in the Santiago Bernabeu hot seat after boss and former player Zinedine Zidane left upon the end of a trophy-less season, having to endure local rivals Atletico lifting the La Liga title.

Although the 13-time European Cup/Champions League winners secured the signing of teenage sensation Eduardo Camavinga on deadline day, the La Liga giants had relatively quiet during the summer transfer window but are scheming to make a splash next time around.

Ancelotti is beginning his second stint as Real Madrid manager

Spanish outlet AS claim that Bernabeu chiefs have four players in mind, all of whom are of world-class pedigree.

First up is, unsurprisingly, Kylian Mbappe, who Real reportedly bid for twice in the final days of the window after agreeing personal terms.

Los Blancos were said to have tabled an offer as steep as worth €200 million (£171.7m) but Paris Saint-Germain turned it down, despite the Frenchman only have one year remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes.

The 22-year-old is said to be unwilling to sign new terms and remain a PSG player, so this one looks likely to happen next summer.

Mbappe is one of Real Madrid's transfer priorities

Many believe Mbappe to be the best young player in world football, but plenty of others would argue it is Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

The 21-year-old has been a sensation, particularly in the Champions League, since his breakout at native Norwegian outfit Molde and has attracted interest from almost every major European club.

With a release clause of £68million set to become active in the summer of 2022, Madrid's hat is well and truly in the ring for a player who could lead their line for the next decade, with AS claiming that the chief has a good relationship with BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Next is Haaland's Bundesliga rival, 12 years his senior.

Robert Lewandowski is a fellow supreme goalscorer, most recently breaking Gerd Muller's record for 40 goals in a single German top-flight campaign, along with netting 10 goals in six games for Bayern Munich and Poland this term.

Rarely injured and ageing like a fine wine, Lewandowski's arrival would ease the goalscoring burden from fellow 33-year-old Karim Benzema and is reportedly seeking a new challenge with two years remaining on his contract in Bavaria.

Heavily linked before he left Dortmund to join Bayern in 2014, the master marksman could be wearing white at club level if Perez and co stump up the cash.

Finally, another French superstar in the final 12 months of his contract, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Red Devils won the race for the 28-year-old in 2016 but Real were reportedly United's nearest rivals and have been interested since.

A move that would allow Pogba to follow in idol Zidane's footsteps, Madrid could get the star without even paying a transfer fee and can legally speak to him from January.

Real currently sit top of the La Liga tables after three matches.

Ancelotti's men have recorded victories over Alaves and Real Betis but were held to a draw by Levante in-between.

Los Blancos have played all three games away from Madrid as their stadium undergoes renovation, much like their first-team squad very shortly.
