New Chelsea signing Raheem Sterling has shown he has moved on from his Manchester City past by snubbing the shirt of his former club.
The England striker has jetted off to the United States to join up with his new colleagues, having completed a move which could see Chelsea pay up to £50m. He became the first senior signing of the Todd Boehly era, but has since been joined at the London club by Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
New teammate Mason Mount has described Sterling as a "top class professional" after playing with the former Liverpool man at international level. And, after a whirlwind trip across the Atlantic, the forward endeared himself to waiting Chelsea fans.
In a clip shared on social media, Sterling can be seen signing shirts held up to him by a group of fans. However, when he gets to a Manchester City jersey he declines, appearing to say "no" before turning away.
Chelsea fans enjoyed the clip, while plenty on social media played down suggestions he should have signed the kit of a club where he spent seven years. "He's at a new club and barely 3 days he joined, you want him to give a bad impression to his new set of fans?" one asked.
He isn't the first Premier League signing to opt against signing a rival's shirt this summer. Back in June, before being unveiled as an Arsenal player, United States keeper Matt Turner turned down the chance to sign a Tottenham Hotspur shirt held up by a fan in his home country.
Sterling wasn't involved in Chelsea's pre-season victory over Club America, where Mount scored the winning goal. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech started in the wide forward positions either side of Kai Havertz, with Mount, Werner and Christian Pulisic playing the second 45.
"I have been lucky to play with him over the last couple of years with England, where he has captained the team at times," Mount told Sky Sports News after the Sterling deal was confirmed. "He is someone who has been there for a very long time. He is a top player and I have learnt a lot off him over the last couple of years."
Manager Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, described the deal as "A huge priority" after landing one of his top targets. "There cannot be a bigger priority because [signing Sterling] was the priority," he said. "Hopefully he shapes our team by just being who he is. He will be a huge asset for us."
