Despite the sensational form of Nkunku this season - he got his 14th goal in all competitions during his side's 2-1 loss at Union Berlin last weekend - Leipzig find themselves 11th in the table. Head coach Jesse Marsch departed after the Union game, but the players reacted well by securing an impressive 2-1 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Andre Silva. The home side are boosted by the return of Willi Orban in defence, while midfielder Amadou Haidara could feature following an ankle problem. Defender Lukas Klostermann is a major doubt, though, after being withdrawn at half-time in the win over City. Attackers Dani Olmo and Yussuf Poulsen, meanwhile, are not expected to be fit again until after the winter break.
Gladbach come into Matchday 15 off the back of two particularly painful defeats. First they lost 4-1 at Cologne in the Rhine derby, and last week they conceded six first-half goals in a 6-0 home beating against Freiburg. Adi Hütter will expect a reaction from his charges this weekend, especially since they have the chance to leapfrog Leipzig with a victory. Captain Lars Stindl and Patrick Herrmann can expect to be restored to the starting line-up, while three-goal forward Alassane Plea should get another chance after being taken off on 29 minutes against Freiburg when his team were already 5-0 down. Worryingly for fans of a Borussia persuasion, Gladbach have taken maximum points on the road just once this season, drawing one and losing five, and have never won in Leipzig.
Match stats
Nkunku is Leipzig's most dangerous outlet this season with six goals and four assists in the Bundesliga. He has been directly involved in a goal (scoring or assisting) in 10 of their last 14 competitive games, and has hit the woodwork more often than anyone else this term (three times).
All five of Leipzig's Bundesliga wins this season have come on home turf.
Interim Leipzig head coach Achim Beierlorzer HAD won 10 of the 36 games he was in charge of across spells at Cologne and Mainz.
Seven-goal Jonas Hofmann is Gladbach's leading scorer this season.
Gladbach defender Nico Elvedi has the highest pass completion rate of any Bundesliga player this season (95.94 per cent).
The Foals are averaging 1.29 points per game under Hütter (W5, D3, L6).
