Preview: Macarthur vs. Perth Glory - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 16 December 2022, 11:45
Macarthur and Perth Glory square off on Sunday looking for the win which may catapult either side up the A-League standings.

While the two clubs are currently in eighth and 11th spot respectively, victory at the Campbelltown Stadium will move either side into contention for the top three.

Match preview

With Macarthur starting their campaign by collecting five points from three matches, Dwight Yorke would have felt that his side would only kick on and earn more positive results.

However, three defeats have come from their last four outings, the most recent being by a 1-0 scoreline at home to Melbourne Victory last weekend.

Just as it appeared that Macarthur were on course for their first clean sheet in five matches, an 84th-minute goal proved to be the difference for the visitors.

As it stands, there is scope for Macarthur's season to go either way, there currently being room for manoeuvre to go as high as fourth or as low as 11th by the end of this matchday.

Nevertheless, Yorke may prefer to focus on the present, aware that his side had netted nine times in five games before the break for the World Cup.

From the perspective of Perth Glory, there was a sense of relief when they were able to get off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 success over Western United.

Despite controlling much of the contest, an 83rd-minute goal halved the deficit to put the home side under pressure, but Ruben Zadkovich witnessed his team hold on to secure an important three points.

With matches in hand on many of the teams above them, Zadkovich will feel that there is an opportunity to make quick headway up the table with a win on Sunday.

This will be Perth's sixth away match in seven fixtures in the A-League this campaign, meaning that a win on unfamiliar territory would put them in a position to take advantage of their home matches later in the season.

Team News

Macarthur are expected to be forced into a change after Daniel Arzani needed to be withdrawn through injury versus Melbourne Victory.

Either Craig Noone or Anthony Carter are expected to be brought into the team in his place in what may be the only alteration made by Yorke.

Zadkovich has also had to contend with injury issues this week with Mustafa Amini and Jack Clisby both sustained problems during the latter stages versus Western United.

Should the Glory pair not be passed fit, Zachary Duncan and Matt Hatch are in line to be drafted into the team in their place.

Ben Azubel is also an alternative down the middle of the attack with David Williams's spot at risk.

Macarthur possible starting lineup:

Kurto; Millar, Uskok, Aspropotamitis, Vuijca; Baccus, De Silva; Drew, Davila, Noone; Arabuli

Perth Glory possible starting lineup:

Reddy; Khelifi, Muir, Beevers, Lachman, Hatch; R.Williams, Duncan, McEneff, Jelacic; D.Williams

We say: Macarthur 2-1 Perth Glory

With both clubs plagued by inconsistency this campaign, this is a difficult match to call. While Glory got back to winning ways last time out, it came against opponents who are now bottom of the table, and we feel that the extra quality is more likely to come from the home side.
