Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of rape has bail extended

Three allegations of rape were made against the player, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

A police investigation into one of those allegations was dropped in July, with the Metropolitan Police confirming they would not be taking action regarding an alleged offence in June 2021.

But two further allegations are still being investigated. An initial bail date of August was extended until October, and that has since been extended again.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police read: "On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police.

"It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022. On 4 July, a man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody.

"While in custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape that were alleged to have been committed in April and June of 2021 against a different woman in her 20s.

"No further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offence in June 2021 because the relevant legislation had not yet come into effect at the time it is said to have occurred.

"This has been explained to the complainant who continues to be supported by officers.

"The man was bailed until a date in early October but his bail has since been extended further — an exact date awaits."

In July, the club explained that their player denies the allegations and remains available for selection.
