Phil Neville slams Man Utd fans calling for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked

Phil Neville has launched a staunch defence of former teammate and Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian is under huge pressure after Sunday's 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Solskjaer declared the Old Trafford humiliation his "darkest day" as United's poor run of form continues.

The 48-year-old has been afforded time and patience but a lack of improvement this season has seen plenty of people call for him to be sacked amid news of internal problems.

United fans left in waves on Sunday with many wanting a change in the dugout as Antonio Conte continues to be linked.

Neville, currently manager at MLS side Inter Miami, has also been in charge of the England women's team.

In both roles he has come under scrutiny for poor results and took aim at social media and those using it to call for Solskjaer's head.

"Social media is an absolute cesspit for people that are just the lowest of the lowest," Neville told the Miami Herald.

"We live in an era where it's seen as quite normal to ask people to be sacked, which I find absolutely incredible.

"If you were in any other workplace and you walked into a shop and you said, 'I want you to be sacked', I think you would be reported to the police.

"People don't probably realise that the things they are writing hurt families, hurt human beings, people that have problems in their lives, and nothing gets done about it."

Solskjaer maintains he is the right man to take United forward, claiming he has "come too far" with his current crop of players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane were all added in the summer but the Red Devils already find themselves eight points off leaders Chelsea in the league.

Their last defeat comes after recent losses to Leicester City and Aston Villa.

United lost 5-0 twice under Sir Alex Ferguson back when Neville was a player and he cited the clear difference between now and then.

"It's not as if United have never lost 5-0 ever in history. This has happened and United bounced back and won things," he added.

"I lost at St. James Park 5-0. Philippe Albert chipped Peter Schmeichel and it felt no different. The only difference was there was not a billion people on Twitter thinking they knew best about this, that and the other."

United's next assignment is a trip to north London to take on Tottenham this weekend.

After that they will travel to Italy to take on Atalanta in the Champions League before hosting Manchester City
