Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand left bickering on Man Utd's stunning comeback win

Manchester United produced a stirring comeback victory in the Champions League against Atalanta on Wednesday night.

Goals from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral had given the Italian side a commanding two-goal cushion to ramp up the pressure on United's under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Yet United turned the game on its head in the second half with a pulsating comeback as Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo all found the net.

It was a result which lifted the doom and gloom around Old Trafford after picking up just one point in their last three Premier League matches, ahead of Sunday's visit of Liverpool.

The outcome of the game brought contrasting reactions from former United stars Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand in the BT Sport studio after the game.

Scholes was downbeat and claimed that the meek showing in the first half was more worrying than the second half was inspiring but Ferdinand argue the nature of the comeback victory could act as a springboard to improved results.

Scholes said, ahead of the visit of Liverpool: "It will be interesting to see what that does on Sunday.

"Will he (Solskjaer) get carried away with the emotion by beating a lower ranked team in the Champions League and go with that on Sunday?

"We'll see."

Ferdinand instead preferred to focus on the rousing nature of the comeback, which saw United hit three unanswered second half goals.

The former defender said: "You know what it's like under the circumstances.

"The personality shown you need to grab onto that.

"You can only beat what is in front of you."

Scholes hit back at that claim and called on United fans not to get carried away with the outcome of Wednesday night's results.

He added: "It was brilliant for a fan but remember who you're playing against!

"You're playing against Atalanta. Yeah they beat them but beat them at the end!"

But Ferdinand continued to strike a more optimistic tone, claiming that the emotion of the game and the togetherness shown by the United players was worth focusing on.

Ferdinand continued: "You have to look beyond the first half.

"You'd address it but look towards the second half and nobody can say to the public the problems are cured but you have to grab onto the emotion from that game.

"A result like this no matter how you get it, you take it. Ole got the answer what he wanted today but you have to say to they gave him a response by working hard and showing togetherness.

"The problems aren't over but please enjoy that!"

The result means that United move to the top of the Champions League group with six points from their opening three matches - two points ahead of both Atalanta and Villarreal, with Young Boys one point further back.

Villarreal won 4-1 in Switzerland on Wednesday night to ensure the group remained tightly congested at the halfway point.
