Odegaard stunner for Arsenal ends Arteta's drought vs Burnley - 5 talking points

mirror.co.uk, 18 September 2021, 15:55

Martin Odegaard fired Arsenal to their second win this season as Mikel Arteta ended his drought against Burnley.

The Gunners boss had never claimed a victory against Sean Dyche's men since arriving at the Emirates prior to kick-off.

But the north London club made sure that record was brought to a halt thanks to a stunning free-kick from Odegaard.

The Norwegian's strike capped off a brilliant performance as Arsenal secured an impressive three points at Turf Moor.

Arsenal are slowly but surely climbing the Premier League table after a terrible start to the season as they notched a second successive victory.

Here are the major talking points from this afternoon's clash

Odegaard stars and co-exists with Smith Rowe

Martin Odegaard was the star man once again as he curled in an exceptional free-kick to open the scoring.

The Norwegian bent it over the wall into the top corner past the helpless Nick Pope.

Odegaard has hit the ground running since making the permanent move to Arsenal. What made his performance even more impressive was that he was doing it from a deeper role.

Odegaard has operated as a no.10 this season with Emile Smith Rowe dropping to the bench, but Arteta started both against Burnley to show their intent to go out and get a positive result.

Arsenal fans have been crying out for the two to be given a chance to coexist in the same team and they didn't disappoint.

Odegaard was comfortable dictating play in a deeper role as Smith Rowe played further forward. It's early days yet but there is plenty of encouragement that they can play together.

Partey return boost

Thomas Partey's first start since returning back from injury was a welcome sight for Arsenal and he bossed things in the middle of the park against Burnley.

Arteta had given him the tough task of being the anchor in midfield as Martin Odegaard roamed forward, but he did it perfectly.

He broke up play on various occasions to disrupt Burnley's attacks and effectively protected the back four.

Albert Sambi Lokonga will feel hard done by that he was dropped given his brilliant start of the season but Partey's experience was crucial for Arsenal this afternoon.

Ramsdale solidifies no.1 spot

There was plenty of debate prior to kick-off over who should start in goal - Aaron Ramsdale or Bernd Leno?

Ramsdale got the nod after his clean sheet last weekend against Norwich and it's hard to argue against that decision.

He made it three clean sheets from his first three games for the Gunners and it's his shirt to lose at the moment after another assured performance against Burnley.

Ramsdale is confident with the ball at his feet which fits Arteta's style of play perfectly as he looks to build from the back.

Tomiyasu nullifies McNeil

Takehiro Tomiyasu had a brilliant debut against Norwich last weekend following his move from Bologna on Deadline Day.

And it was another promising showing from the Japanese international.

He wasn't given an easy task up against the speedy Dwight McNeil who has been on fire this season, but he kept him quiet for the most part.

Tomiyasu also has a great aerial presence for a right-back, as he can also operate as centre-half, and that was put to good use as Burnley piled in crosses for strikers Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Arteta ends drought

Mikel Arteta was finally able to secure his win against Burnley.

The physicality of Sean Dyche's men had got the better of the Gunners in previous matches, but they seemed to find a solution this time around to get the better of them.

It was a bold move to start Smith Rowe and Odegaard together, but with Arsenal expected to have the majority of the ball, the Gunners boss wanted to take the game right to them.

And that's exactly what they did.

Thomas Partey's first start of the season was vital as he's exactly the type of player that Arsenal have been missing in the middle of the park to match up with Burnley's midfield.
