Notts County captain Kyle Cameron then headed home a leveller but Wrexham's Elliot Lee scored the winner late on.
Experienced goalkeeper Foster, though, was in the thick of the action, producing a heroic stoppage time penalty save denying Cedwyn Scott, to the delight of Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds.
Images have since appeared to suggest the 40-year-old came off his line when the spot-kick was being take.
A retake could have arguably been awarded, however, VAR is not present in the National League.

Fans were quick to take to social media to point out Foster's positioning.
One said: "I hate to be THAT guy, but @BenFoster is off his line before the kick is taken, so it should've been retaken…"
Another added: "@BenFoster don't play the whole 'fair play to Notts County' line, when you clearly have no concept of what fair play is."

A third wrote: "I wanted Wrexham to win. It's done now. But if Ben Foster is on the line, it's very close."
And a fourth stated: "Ben Foster was always saving that but he was off his line."
Wrexham are now three points ahead of Notts County with a game in hand, as they eye promotion to the EFL.
