Norwich v Liverpool team news: Konate debut, Robertson doubt, Cantwell update

talksport.com, 9 August 2021, 13:53
Liverpool will begin their quest to wrestle the Premier League trophy back from Manchester City when they face Norwich this weekend.

The Reds began their title-winning season with a 4-1 win over the Canaries in a campaign in which their opponents were ultimately relegated.

Jurgen Klopp's side have enjoyed a fruitful pre-season that has seen both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return from lengthy injury lay-offs.

For Norwich, meanwhile, they will once again return to the Premier League by facing Liverpool after getting promoted as Championship winners.

Daniel Farke's side will hope they are in much better stead to beat the drop this time around but they have already lost Emi Buendia to Aston Villa.

Todd Cantwell has also been linked with reuniting with the Argentine at Villa Park as the man to replace Jack Grealish.

And on the pitch, Norwich were dealt a severe confidence blow with a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle during their final warm-up fixture on Saturday.

Norwich team news

A mixture of injuries and COVID-19 complications have left the Carrow Road outfit scrambling ahead of their clash with Liverpool.

Norwich could be without Cantwell after he sat out the defeat to Newcastle and boss Farke did little to ease fears he could miss this weekend's fixture.

The German said: "He rolled his ankle; he has a strain in his ankle ligament. But we scanned it this morning, and it is not too bad. We have to wait how it develops."

A coronavirus outbreak in Norwich's camp has also disrupted pre-season preparations with six players forced to isolate.

Grant Hanley, Onel Hernandez, Jordan Hugill, Przemyslaw Placheta, Bali Mumba and Milot Rashica were all absent from the Newcastle game.

But Teemu Pukki - Norwich's top goalscorer during their last top-flight campaign - could be fit to start against Liverpool.

The Finnish striker is back in training after his Euro 2020 exploits and he stepped up his return to full fitness with an appearance on Tyneside.

Liverpool team news

Andy Robertson is the main injury concern for boss Jurgen Klopp against Norwich after he suffered a grisly injury on Sunday.

The Reds are sweating on the defender's fitness after he appeared to badly roll his right ankle in a pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao.

The 27-year-old didn't miss a single league match last season, but is a serious doubt for Saturday after having to limp off the pitch.

Kostas Tsimikas or even James Milner would be expected to deputise for Robertson should a scan rule him out of action this weekend.

Liverpool fielded a strong starting 11 against Bilbao, which included Alisson, Van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Joel Matip started at centre-back but Ibrahima Konate could be in line for his Premier League debut following his arrival from RB Leipzig.

Jordan Henderson is unlikely to be rushed back into the team following his involvement at Euro 2020 meaning Naby Keita is likely to retain his spot.

Harvey Elliot also caught the eye against Bilbao and he could face Norwich having scored against them on loan at Blackburn in the Championship last season.
