Nick Pope red card: Can Newcastle star play in Carabao Cup final

Pope's red card has only lead to a one-match ban because it wasn't violent conduct.

And unfortunately for Newcastle and Pope, that ban applies to all domestic competitions, which means he will miss the cup final at Wembley.

It is a huge blow for Eddie Howe's men and they will be forced to play one of their reserve options.

In a cruel twist of fate, second choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is cup-tied after making two appearances for Man United while on loan at Old Trafford in the first half of the season.

Karl Darlow is also out on loan with Hull City, meaning it will be Loris Karius or Mark Gillespie who will fill in for Pope.

Karius is yet to make his Newcastle debut and last played for an English club in 2018 for Liverpool - which was THAT Champions League final display against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Gillespie - a boyhood Magpies player who returned to St James' Park in 2020 after spells with Carlisle, Blyth Spartans, Walsall and Motherwell - has only made three senior appearances for the Toon.

Either way, it's an awful situation for Newcastle and Pope's red card could have huge ramifications as they look to end their trophy drought.
