The Toon Army have suffered plenty this campaign but now they have more to cheer about as they finally registered their first three-point haul.
This could mark a turning point in their season with Eddie Howe's tenure so far seeing them lose just once in four matches.
There are still improvements to be made but former Premier League star Dean Saunders insisted: "It's the best they have played in a long, long time."
Callum Wilson got the only goal of the game as he finished superbly after Nick Pope dropped the ball in the penalty area after landing on Fabian Schar, who gets an unusal assist to his name.
Burnley, meanwhile, were left to rue a missed chance against relegation rivals and will be fearing the worst after a first-half injury to Maxwel Cornet.
They saw Matej Vydra, who came on for Cornet, miss a great first-half chance, while Jay Rodriguez had a goal disallowed for offside late on.
But in the end, despite hanging on at the death, Newcastle claimed a vital three points.
One man who did impress during the match was Joelinton, who is already improving under Howe, and a stunning 60-yard dribble won him some joking praise from Saunders.
"This sounds ridiculous but, Pele came into my head," the ex-Aston Villa striker said after watching the superb run.
"Has his [Joelinton's] brother been here for the last 18 months? He looks like a different player.
"He's beat four players there, out of nothing, in a tight situation, moving the ball from his left foot to his right foot.
"Bearing in mind he's got to be 6ft6in and he's run 60 yards, beat four players. I thought, 'if this goes in it's goal of the season'."
Later Saunders confirmed his comparison was a joke, but doubled down on his praise for the Magpies ace.
"Tounge in cheek," he confirmed. "£40million - bargain. If you would have seen this mazy run though, it was incredible. He's got a bit of confidence.
"I always feel sorry for big strikers who are 6ft6in because when they're bad they look twice as bad. They look clumsy and they can't run. It's harsh on them.
"The only advice you can give him is 'work your socks off' and the fans have forgiven him for his mistakes. He's trying."
