Netherlandsvs.Germany

sportsmole.co.uk, 8 September 2024, 10:59
Having fired home five goals without reply in their opening UEFA Nations League contest at the weekend, Germany will face a far tougher test against the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

Their old foes seem the likeliest challengers for top spot in League A Group 3, and with national pride at stake, Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann will select a full-strength XI at Johan Cruijff Arena.

Germany have begun the transition towards a more youthful squad, as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos all stepped aside since Die Nationaelf came up short on home turf at Euro 2024.

Once again, new captain Joshua Kimmich will start at right-back, leading out a side featuring 21-year-olds Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala as their two chief creators.

Both scored as the Germans thrashed Hungary in Dusseldorf, and Kai Havertz finally joined them on the scoresheet with a late penalty, having already twice struck the crossbar.

The Arsenal forward linked up with West Ham United's Niclas Fullkrug - who has now scored 14 goals in just 22 appearances for his country - but it remains to be seen whether both will start up front against sterner opposition.

At the back, Antonio Rudiger's absence should see Nico Schlotterbeck paired with Jonathan Tah in central defence, while David Raum and Maximilian Mittelstadt vie for selection on the left.

Without Kroos or Gundogan, there are several contenders to feature in midfield: Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlovic also scored against Hungary and will now hope to start ahead of either Robert Andrich or Pascal Gross; Emre Can and newcomer Angelo Stiller are less likely to play.

Germany possible starting lineup: Ter Stegen; Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Tah, Mittelstadt; Andrich, Pavlovic; Musiala, Havertz, Wirtz; Fullkrug
