Marvin Ducksch brace sends Werder Bremen top with Nordderby win over Hamburg

bundesliga.com, 4 March 2022, 12:15
Marvin Ducksch struck twice to give Werder Bremen a 3-2 win at northern neighbours Hamburg on Sunday as the visitors claimed both Nordderby glory and top-spot.

Hamburg 2-3 Werder Bremen

Goals: 0-1 Ducksch pen. (10'), 1-1 Meffert (47'), 1-2 Füllkrug (51'), 1-3 Ducksch (77'), 2-3 Glatzel (80')

With top-spot up on the line, there were not only local bragging rights up for grabs in the second Nordderby of 2021/22, but also a place in the summit there for the team that could grab all three points. And Werder, who started the weekend top but had moved to third by kick-off on Sunday afternoon, made the first move just 10 minutes in. Ömer Toprak helped the ball on at the edge of the Hamburg box but its journey was hastened by the arm of Jonas Meffert, allowing Ducksch to step up and convert from the spotto give the visitors the lead. Hamburg thought they were level eight minutes later but Moritz Heyer's controlled volley was chalked off for Robert Glatzel's push before the ball fell to his teammate.

In need of a turnaround after the break, HSV wasted no time pulling level in the second half. They needed just two minutes for Meffert to make up for his earlier handball, collecting Glatzel's deflected shot just six yards from goal and prodding home as the offside flag stayed down. The home side's joy didn't last long, though, with Bremen awarded a second VAR-consulted penalty of the day as a result of errant Hamburg hands in the box. This time Sonny Kittel was the culprit and Niclas Füllkrug the man that tucked home from the spot. Ducksch then found the bottom corner from the edge of the box, but Glatzel kept the game on a knife edge with a close range finish with 10 minutes to play. It set up a grandstand finish and Hamburg had the ball in the back of the net in the 95th minute but their dramatic-looking equaliser was chalked off for offside as Werder eventually held on to claim both derby spoils and first place.

Match stats

A first home league defeat of the season ended Hamburg's 12 match unbeaten run on home soil (W6, D6).

Ducksch has scored nine goals in his last nine appearances.

The Werder forward has successfully converted all eight of his previous penalties in Bundesliga 2. Füllkrug also stretched his penalty streak to seven out of his last seven, while HSV have seen all 10 penalties that they've conceded this season find the back of the net.

This was Werder's first win at the Volksparkstadion since their 2-0 victory in September 2013, when Nils Petersen was the man that scored twice.

Coaches Tim Walter and Ole Werner spent a year together at Holstein Kiel, where the latter eventually succeeded the former as head coach in 2019.

Bremen have won eight and drawn one of nine unbeaten games of Werner's tenure so far.

Matchday 24 round-up

Paderborn 3-3 Erzgebirge Aue

Goals: 1-0 Srbeny (26), 1-1 Nazarov pen. (63'), 1-2 Zolinski pen. (65'), 1-3 Nazarov (70'), 2-3 Ademi (89'), 3-3 Correia (90+2')

Aue were denied a first win since Matchday 14 as Paderborn clinched a dramatic draw in Friday's six-goal thriller. The hosts had taken a first half lead thanks to Dennis Srbeny's close-range header before Erzgebirge roared into life after the break. Dmitri Nazarov tucked home from the penalty spot on 63 minutes and, within two minutes of their equaliser, the visitors were in front as Ben Zolinski rifled home against his former club. Paderborn had their third in the space of just seven minutes when Nazarov despatched his second spot-kick with 20 minutes to play, but Kemal Ademi and Marcel Correia - in the 89th and 92nd minutes respectively - rescued a point for the home team and left Aue without a win in 10.

Hannover 2-0 Holstein Kiel

Goals: 1-0 Kerk (65'), 2-0 Hult (72')

There were first half chances at both ends and it took a stunning double block on the goal line from Phil Neumann to deny first Sebastian Kerk and then Maximilian Beier, but the two sides were level until Kerk broke the deadlock on 65 minutes. Niklas Hult's cutback from the left wasn't dealt with in the Kiel box, allowing Kerk to pounce and swivel home with his left foot from the corner of the six-yard box. Hult made sure of all three points as he turned home Mark Diemer's effort, with the Hannover left-back surprised to have been played onside by a slowly retreating Alexander Mühling. The win moves the 12th-placed home side level on points with their visitors in 11th.

Karlsruhe 1-1 Schalke

Goals: 0-1 Terodde (27'), 1-1 Choi (34')

Looking to keep pace in one of the most thrilling title races in Bundesliga 2 history, Schalke went in front shortly before the half hour mark. Marius Bülter's excellent near post flick-on found Simon Terrode just a couple of yards out and the 33-year-old was never going to miss with the goal at his mercy. Terrode's 16th goal of the campaign was soon pegged back, however, thanks to Kyouk-Rok Choi's close-range finish. There would be no further breakthrough in the second half as Schalke lost some ground on the league leaders.

Hansa Rostock 0-2 Nuremberg

Goals: 0-1 Köpke (34'), 0-2 Duman (63')

The away side took a 34th minute lead through Pascal Köpke, who followed up Taylan Duman's missed penalty first to nod beyond Markus Kolke. Having saved Duman's initial attempt, the Rostock 'keeper had no chance to get back to his feet in time to also deny Köpke. In the second period, Duman had redemption for his err from 12-yards as he rattled home from a similar position at the other end to double Nuremberg's advantage. There would be no way back for Rostock; Nuremberg picking up a second successive 2-0 win.

Ingolstadt 1-3 St. Pauli

Goals 0-1 Kyereh (22'), 1-1 Ayensa (35'), 1-2 Burgstaller (37'), 1-3 Makienok (55')

Pauli were hoping to take advantage of their Nordderby rivals playing a day later and regain top spot on Saturday as they travelled to an Ingolstadt side rooted to the bottom of the division. And by the midway point of the first half, the visitors were ahead. Daniel-Kofi Kyereh was the man on target, placing a sublime 25-yard free-kick into the top corner and beyond the reach of Dejan Stojanovic. Dennis Eckert Ayensa had his team level before the break but that parity lasted just two minutes as league top scorer Guido Burgstaller expertly restored Pauli's lead. They soon had a third after the break thanks to Simon Makienok's thumping header that sealed all three points for Germany's Kult Klub.

Dynamo Dresden 0-1 Darmstadt

Goals: 0-1 Honsak (90')

Darmstadt went to Dresden on Saturday to close out the day, knowing that a win for the visitors would see them end the day at the head of the pile in another topsy-turvy weekend in Bundesliga 2. They would get their wish but Torsten Lieberknecht's side left it right to the end to do so. Mathias Honsak was the man that broke Dynamo hearts, popping up with the winner in the 90th minute. While Darmstadt moved into pole position, the defeat left Dresden still firmly in the relegation battle at the other end of the table.

Heidenheim 1-1 Sandhausen

Goals: 1-0 Mohr pen. (27'), 1-1 Soukou (32')

Rounding out the weekend alongside the Nordderby on Sunday where two further matches - the first of which was between a Heidenheim team looking to keep pace with the promotion hopefuls and a Sandhausen side aiming to move out of the promotion/relegation play-off places. The hosts were quite literally handed the lead as Erich Berko handled in the box for Tobias Mohr to stroke home from the penalty spot but their advantage was short-lived. Cebio Soukou ultimately grabbed his side a point with a superb feint and finish from the edge of the box.

Jahn Regensburg 0-0 Fortuna Düsseldorf

Sunday also saw Regensburg host Düsseldorf, with both sides starting the day in the middle of the pack and looking to avoid being pulled further down the table. Neither side could find a telling contribution at the business end of the pitch, though. The result was a goalless draw that leaves Regensburg 10th and Düsseldorf looking over their shoulders, just two points clear of third-bottom Hansa.
