Marcus Rashford and Russell Brand lead tributes on 33rd Hillsborough anniversary

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has paid his respects to the 97 Liverpool fans who tragically passed away as a result of the Hillsborough Stadium tragedy in 1989.

The Reds posted their own tribute on Twitter that read: "Our thoughts, as always, are with all those affected by the tragedy at Hillsborough 33 years ago today and the 97 fans who will never be forgotten. You'll Never Walk Alone." England international Rashford responded by writing: "Never forgotten" alongside a red heart emoji.

Rashford was of course not the only figure to express their sorrow and sympathy on the 33rd anniversary of such a dark day in this country's history. Hollywood star and YouTube personality Russell Brand also took to Twitter to reference the lessons learned in the wake of the tragedy.

Brand wrote: "33 years today. Respect to the families of the 97 unlawfully killed at Hillsborough. You'll Never Walk Alone. I'll never forget the lessons this tragedy taught us. #JFT97 #Hillsborough."

Two former Reds stars in Jose Enrique and Jamie Carragher also uploaded tributes to Twitter.

Spaniard Enrique wrote: "33 years ago today, 97 people lost their lives at an FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough. Our thoughts today and always will be with the families, friends and everyone affected by the tragedy on 15 April 1989. YNWA!". Carragher uploaded a picture of the faces of all 97 victims accompanied with the hashtags Justice for the 97 and You'll Never Walk Alone.

Plenty of other Premier League teams also took the time to send a message of support, with Tottenham Hotspur's official account writing: "Our thoughts today are with @LFC and those who lost loved ones in the Hillsborough Stadium disaster on 15 April 1989."

Their North London neighbours Arsenal wrote something similar with: "We stand with @LFC in remembering the 97 victims of Hillsborough tragedy, 33 years ago today. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Liverpool's local rivals Everton have long paid their respects for the Reds fans who died in Sheffield that day and continued this year with a touching tweet that read: "Thirty-three years ago today, a devastating tragedy occurred during Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. We were - and remain - a city united in its grief."
