Dortmund got their European campaign under way in style with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Copenhagen in front of 81,000 at Signal Iduna Park on Matchday 1. Bellingham rounded off the scoring that day to give Gio Reyna his second assist of the evening after coming on for the injured Thorgan Hazard in the first half. Captain Marco Reus had earlier made it 1-0 as he so often does to set the wheels in motion for Borussia's sixth win of the season - and fifth to nil - from eight fixtures. First-choice goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is still out with a muscular issue, so Alexander Meyer will continue after a clean sheet on his Champions League debut. It's expected that Edin Terzic will deploy all three of his Germany international centre-backs in Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck. Reyna may have to settle for a place on the bench again as he continues his steady comeback from injury. The in-form Julian Brandt will likely continue, with Anthony Modeste leading the line.

Haaland enjoyed a blistering two-and-a-half seasons at Dortmund, scoring at almost a goal a game to smash numerous club and Bundesliga records. In little shock to Bundesliga observers, he's continued that sort of form following his summer move to Manchester, including a brace as they began their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 win at Sevilla. He's been joined at the Etihad Stadium by some familiar faces in ex-BVB defenders Manuel Akanji and Sergio Gomez, as well as goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from Arminia Bielefeld. Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gündogan are also Bundesliga made and expected to start for former Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola. City have had a week to recover from their last game in Spain after all football was cancelled in England over the weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Bellingham has three Champions League goals (all for Dortmund), which is the joint-most by an English teenager in the competition (level with Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden).

Reyna set up two of the three goals against Copenhagen, becoming the first American since 2010/11 to register two assists in a Champions League game.

Reus is Dortmund's record scorer in the Champions League with 22 goals, including two in four against City.

Dortmund won 1-0 and drew 1-1 in the only previous group meetings with City back in 2012/13.

BVB went on to reach the final that year for the first time since winning the Champions League in 1997. City finished runners-up in their maiden European Cup final in 2021.

Haaland scored 62 goals in 67 Bundesliga games for BVB, and 86 from 89 in all competitions. His return in the Champions League was 15 in 13 games.
