Man Utd stars' evolving stance on sacking Solskjaer after Liverpool humiliation

mirror.co.uk, 25 October 2021, 18:29

Since the full-time whistle blew at Old Trafford on Sunday, doubts have continued to grow over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's future as Manchester United manager.

And things seem to moving quickly inside the Red Devils' dressing room, too, with clear indications that Solskjaer has lost the faith of his players.

The United boss returned to his beloved club in December 2018 when Jose Mourinho had seemingly lost the dressing room, and now it appears the 'Baby-faced Assassin' is set to do the same.

Although the humiliating 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool could prove to be the straw that broke the camel's back, the players' skepticism around Solskjaer is said to have been brewing over the past few weeks.

Solskjaer remains determined to prove his critics wrong

Despite the thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Atalanta on Wednesday, The Sun reported that that several Red Devils players were already 'far less convinced' that their gaffer is up to the task of returning United to the glory days.

In the aftermath of Sunday's defeat, Solskjaer, according to the Daily Mail, told his players to fight and made a rallying cry for them to stick together under his leadership.

The 48-year-old's do-or-die message comes prior to three tough games which precede the international break and the Manchester Evening News ' claim that the club are considering the sack.

The Red Devils visit Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before travelling to Italy and meeting Atalanta again in the Champions League.

Then comes the small matter of the Manchester derby on Saturday, November 6, a fixture which Solskjaer has seen success in during his tenure, but may not get the chance to inflict any further pain on Pep Guardiola 's side.

The Norwegian will not quit, though, making his intentions clear when speaking to Sky Sports after his team's thrashing.

"We've come too far as a group and we're too close to give up now," Solskjaer stated post-match on Sunday.

"I've heard nothing else [about a potential departure], and I'm still thinking about tomorrow's work, of course. We're all low.

"I can't say now that I've felt any worse than this. This is the lowest I've been. But as I've said, I accept the responsibility, and that is mine today. It's mine going forward."

He continued: "I do believe in myself, I do believe that I am getting close to what I want with the club, I think what we've done, what I've seen, the development, of course, the results lately haven't been good enough.

"But I've got to keep strong and I do believe in what we've been doing, the coaching staff and the players."

Some of his players have spoken out following the match and taken responsibility, one of only 10 games which the Red Devils have lost by five or more goals in their history.

A number of players have spoken out following their side's loss

Luke Shaw said: "I think football is obviously a team sport, we are in it together and we are all together.

"But I think, as individuals, we need to take responsibility for some of the actions tonight.

"Personally, that is of course why I am here, I am not hiding inside. I know I was not at my best tonight, I know I was not good enough, and of course I will take some responsibility for that."

Team-mate David De Gea wrote on social media: "I feel the pain of our supporters, you give the team everything and we must do the same.

"I love this club and we will not accept this performance."

And Cristiano Ronaldo himself admitted that the team is to blame on Instagram while thanking the United supporters.

"This is on us, only on us, because there's no one else to blame. Our fans were, once again, amazing in their constant support.

"They deserve better than this, much better, and it's up to us to deliver. The time is now!"

Whether that time is under Solskjaer remains to be seen.
