Man Utd's social media team post video of Ronaldo being loudly booed by fans

Manchester United dropped a major clanger before they were humbled by Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday - after the club's social media team shared a clip of Cristiano Ronaldo being showered with boos by his own fans.

Ronaldo's popularity with the United fanbase has plummeted since he made it clear that he wants to quit the club just 12 months after making a sensational return. The 37-year-old informed the club hierarchy of his wish shortly before the club's pre-season tour, which Ronaldo missed.

Erik ten Hag made the decision to start Ronaldo on the bench during United's shock 2-1 defeat against Brighton in their opening match of the season - and the wantaway star's miserable day got even worse when he was forced to endure a frosty reception from disgruntled United fans.

In a video shared by the club, United fans can be heard enthusiastically welcoming players onto the pitch ahead of the Brighton match, but the mood soon changes when Ronaldo emerges from the tunnel, with those cheers quickly turning into jeers.

Ronaldo's attempts to engineer a speedy exit - which has left the United fanbase fractured - completely overshadowed Ten Hag's preparations for the season.

But the club are still desperate to convince their talisman to stay put due to the dearth of central striking options available to Ten Hag.

After snubbing Ronaldo, the former Ajax chief saw his side slump to defeat against the Seagulls courtesy of a brilliant brace from Pascal Gross. A late own goal from Alexis Mac Allister halved the deficit, but the damage was done for United, who were loudly booed off by fans in both halves.

Ten Hag did eventually turn to the former Juventus man in the second half in a bid to salvage something from the match, but Ronaldo failed to find the net in what could prove to be his Manchester United swansong.

Despite Ronaldo's desire to leave, a plausible exit route has failed to materialise for the former Real Madrid star. Both Chelsea and Bayern Munich have ruled out an approach for the striker, who plundered 24 goals in a United that struggled last year.

Although Ten Hag has already publicly stated his desire to keep Ronaldo around, the forward has already drawn the ire of the new Old Trafford chief after leaving the ground early during United's pre-season friendly clash against Rayo Vallecano a couple of weeks ago - an act that was deemed "unacceptable" by Ten Hag.
