Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was shown the door by United bosses following their woeful run of form in recent weeks.
The club have since appointed Ralph Rangnick and the German has been linked with bringing in a host of new players next month.
So, what are the latest rumours and headlines about how United could turn around their torrid season? talkSPORT.com takes a look…
Marcus Rashford
Barcelona are interested in a move for the England striker, according to Catalan outlet El Nacional.
However, the report adds doubts over whether the Spanish club could afford the 24-year-old, even thought United might be willing to sell for the right offer.
Barcelona are on the hunt for a new forward to lead the line after Sergio Aguero's health scare, and Luuk de Jong's poor form.
£60million-rated Rashford was linked with a move to the Nou Camp in 2018 as a long-term replacement for Luis Suarez but the move didn't come to fruition.
Vinicius Junior
United are one of the clubs possibly interested in the Real Madrid sensation, according to the Mirror.
Vinicius has already netted 12 goals this season - more than double his previous personal best return for Los Blancos.
The Brazilian told Spanish TV network Movistar this week: "Better not to put any price on me, it is better for me to stay here at Real Madrid."
Frenkie de Jong
United reportedly want Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to replace Paul Pogba if the Frenchman decides to leave.
Pogba's contract expires at the end of the season and there is currently no sign of fresh terms being agreed, with the midfielder thought to be asking the club for double his £290,000-a-week salary.
And according to the Independent, Netherlands star De Jong could be his replacement at Old Trafford.
Latest reports from El Nacional claim Rangnick has set his sights on the former Ajax star amid doubts over United's current crop of midfielders.
The report adds that the Red Devils are hoping to take advantage of Barcelona's financial woes by tabling a £47million bid for De Jong.
Ousmane Dembele
United are also interested in De Jong's Barcelona teammate, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The report claims Dembele has been offered a new salary of £9.4m to stay at the Nou Camp but is exploring his options with the Red Devils among his suitors.
Newcastle are also keen to bring him to St James' Park and end the Frenchman's torrid four-year spell at Barcelona since leaving Borussia Dortmund.
Diogo Dalot
The United defender has seemingly indicated that he is set to stay and fight for his place at the club after starting the last two league fixtures.
"It's what I'm here for," he told the club's website. "It's not easy when you're outside [the starting XI] and you don't play as much.
"But our job to keep ready and I think I was doing a fantastic job outside the pitch being ready.
"When the opportunity comes, I now feel I need to keep going and give everything when I'm on the pitch too."
Timo Werner
United interim manager Rangnick 'wants to discuss' a shock transfer swoop for Chelsea forward Timo Werner.
The German is reportedly keen on buying the Blues forward having done so already when he was the sporting director of RB Leipzig.
Given that Chelsea signed him last summer and then signed Romelu Lukaku in the 2021 summer transfer window potentially shows that the club's hierarchy don't have much faith in the 25-year-old who has just seven Premier League goals to his name since his arrival.
According to Bild, Rangnick is keen to give his former player the chance to reignite his career at Old Trafford.
Philippe Coutinho
United have been offered the chance to sign Philippe Coutinho, according to Spanish outlet SPORT.
The Barcelona star has been heavily linked with a move back to England with Newcastle United linked with a move in January.
However with United preparing for a new era under Ralf Rangnick it means that the prospect of signing the 29-year-old could be appealing.
Jesse Lingard
United are willing to sell the England midfielder for £10m in January, according to the Sun.
West Ham were priced out of a permanent move for Lingard in the summer as the Red Devils insisted they wanted £25m.
The 28-year-old has only made eight appearances - and a solitary start in the League Cup -under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.
Jules Kounde
Sevilla are reportedly confident of holding onto Jules Kounde this winter but are willing to hold talks over the defender's next summer.
Marca are reporting that Manchester United are interested in signing Kounde.
Kounde has a £69million release clause at Sevilla but Marca claim the club believe no-one will activate that this January.
But the LaLiga side are open to discussions over the 23-year-old at the end of the season should United show serious interest in paying up.
Chelsea want Kounde last summer but Marca claim they 'did not even come close' to offering enough.
Fichajes now claim Sevilla have been considering a swoop for Cavani and United could use the veteran striker as a makeweight in a deal.
Franck Kessie
Manchester United will reportedly look to land AC Milan star Franck Kessie on a free transfer next summer.
According to Fichajes, Milan have yet to meet Kessie's wage demands of £150,000-a-week and that could see him leave at the end of the season.
The Ivory Coast international's current contract expires in June and he is free to talk to other clubs and sign an agreement this winter.
United are among the teams eyeing Kessie with the Red Devils in desperate need of reinforcements in midfield.
Aurelien Tchouameni
United are reportedly stepping up their interest in Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and could move for him in January.
Football Insider claim club scouts have regularly watched Tchouameni in recent weeks.
And the Red Devils are said to be ready to line up a deal for the 21-year-old if their talent spotters are suitably impressed.
Football Insider add that Tchouameni is being considered as a replacement for Paul Pogba in the United midfield.
The ex-Bordeaux ace, who has five France caps already, is under contract at Monaco until the summer of 2024.
