When Los Angeles FC announced that Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini and Welsh striker Gareth Bale had been signed this summer to bolster the team's powerful roster heading into the end of the MLS regular season, many soccer fans dreamed of their players' debut day, and on Sunday that dream became a reality.
Chiellini had 60 minutes of action and Bale 20 in LAFC's away win at Nashville SC on Matchday 21 of the MLS season and while they were not brilliant in their respective debuts, July 17th, 2022 could be the start of a new era.
Without Bale and Chiellini, LAFC was already leading the MLS
Prior to these aforementioned debuts, the team that had Mexican striker Carlos Vela as its main figure in one of the most powerful rosters in MLS was two points behind Austin FC as the best team so far in the regular season, with two games in hand.
In other words, Vela and company were already, along with NYC FC, the heavy favorites to be MLS champions, and when you add two world stars like Chiellini and Bale to the bunch, it's impossible to avoid wondering if this trio could lead the best team in leagues history.
Expectations sky-high among LAFC world
Of course, it is impossible to be sure that such a hypothesis will come true, there are significant doubts about the Welshman's professionalism and the natural decline in the Italian veteran's career, however, expectations are extremely high for the team coached by Steve Cherundolo.
It was Cherundolo himself who mentioned that it is difficult to integrate players like Bale and Chiellini who "are in preseason" when the rest of the squad is already at the peak of its performance, however, the attempt will be made, because at the end of the day, dreaming does not cost anything.
