Luton to 'throw everything at' Huddersfield who have never won a home play-off

talksport.com, 16 May 2022, 11:28
Huddersfield and Luton face off tonight in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.

The sides go into this evening's decisive match in West Yorkshire level after a 1-1 draw in Friday's first leg.

Danel Sinani put Huddersfield ahead at Kenilworth Road but Sonny Bradley equalised to leave the clash finely poised.

The Terriers finished third in the regular season, just missing out on automatic promotion while Luton beat Middlesbrough to the final play-off place.

Now, both will be eager to reach the Wembley play-off final on May 29 where either Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest will await.

Huddersfield v Luton: What has been said?

Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan: "They know we have 90 minutes where we need to beat Luton to continue in the play-offs.

"[On Friday] it was important that if we couldn't win, we didn't lose and go into the home leg with the possibility that if we win the game, we'll progress.

"It was a demanding game, but we were expecting that. If you play a play-off and you don't expect a demanding game, you are totally wrong.

"Now we are going to have another demanding game at home where the pitch is a little bit bigger and we have our own fans.

"But I expect the demands and the challenges to produce another equal and balanced game."

Luton skipper Sonny Bradley: "I think they probably think it is in their hands a little bit going to their ground, but we believe in ourselves, we are backing ourselves and we're one win away now from the national stadium.

"It's one big game on Monday and I'm sure everyone will try their best to make themselves available. We will turn up and throw everything at it."

Huddersfield v Luton: Match facts

Huddersfield Town have lost just three of their last 30 matches in all competitions (W17 D10) and are unbeaten in their last eight (W6 D2). Since the start of December, the Terriers have lost fewer games than any other EFL side in all competitions (3).

Luton are winless in all five of their Football League play-off matches (D3 L2), losing both of their away games in the competition: 2-1 at Crewe Alexandra in 1997 and 3-2 at Blackpool in 2017.

Huddersfield have never won a home match in the Football League play-offs in nine previous attempts (D6 L3), the most a side has played at home without winning in the history of the play-offs.

Luton Town have won just one of their last five away games against Huddersfield (D2 L2) - all in league football - winning 2-0 in the Championship in July 2020.

Huddersfield are unbeaten in their last five Championship matches against Luton, although four have been draws; the other game was a 2-0 home win last month.

Luton's Kal Naismith has eight assists in the Championship this season, having not assisted a single goal in 22 appearances last season. Five of those assists have come from set plays, becoming the first Hatters player with five set play assists in a league season (inc. play-offs) since Alan Sheehan in 2017-18 (7).

Huddersfield have drawn their last five Football League play-off matches, with three of these draws ending with the Terriers winning on penalties (2012 League One final vs Sheffield United, 2017 Championship semi-final vs Sheffield Wednesday, 2017 Championship final vs Reading). They've been involved in twice as many penalty shootouts as any other side in the play-offs (6).

In nine of the last 11 seasons, the side that finished third in the table have won their semi-final home leg against the sixth-placed team in the Championship play-offs (D1 L1). Only once in that time has the sixth-placed team won away from home: Derby County against Leeds United in 2018-19.
