Drama is never far away in the Football League and the Hatters and Blades provided two very different ways of giving them a shot at promotion to the Premier League.
With Fulham champions, Bournemouth sealing the automatic spot, and Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest safe in third and fourth only two important places were up for grabs.
It was a fight between Sheffield United, Luton, Middlesbrough and Millwall for the last two play-off spots.
The Blades did it the easy way, despite facing the title-winning Cottagers at Bramall Lane, as they whooped their on-the-beach opponents 4-0, leaving no doubt about them finishing fifth.
Luton, though, on an incredible rise through the Football League, sneaked it - literally.
A game with Reading, who were safe from relegation, was proving a tough test and it needed a moment of magic.
And when you're the Hatters, you know you can pull a rabbit out.
Their wizard on the final day was Harry Potter Cornick.
In a seemingly innocuous passage of play during added time in the first half, Reading goalkeeper Orjan Nyland rolled the ball in front of himself.
Trouble was, he hadn't looked behind him.
Cornick jumped out of the shadows and conjured up the only goal of the game by stealing the ball off Nyland's toes and slipping the ball into the back of the net.
Arsenal hero Perry Groves said delightedly: "Harry Cornick has just gone over to the Luton Town fans and he's taken off his false nose and glasses because that was a cunning disguise.
"Nyland had no idea that he was there."
Former Football League star Adrian Clarke later added: "Wow, what a mistake.
"The goalkeeper rolling it out, Harry Cornick sneaks in. It is the ultimate play-off gift, it really is.
"It's birthday, it's Christmas, it's bar mitzvah, it's everything thrown together," presenter Dan Windle chimed in.
It was reminiscent of a goal scored by Robbie Keane for Tottenham against Birmingham.
The Irishman robbed debutant Andy Marro
And to complete their joy, both Millwall and Middlesbrough lost, to Bournemouth and Preston, respectively.
Now the final table has been confirmed, it will be Huddersfield Town vs Luton Town and Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United - and you can hear both ties on talkSPORT.
