Liverpool without Konate and Everton buzzing ahead of derby - predicted line-ups

talksport.com, 5 December 2024, 11:10
Liverpool make the short trip to Everton this weekend for the first Merseyside derby of the season, live on talkSPORT.

The Reds are flying high at the top of the table, though Arsenal and Chelsea are not far behind.

Of course, a draw at Newcastle in midweek wasn't expected, but it was a thrilling 3-3 tie, and Arne Slot's men came from behind twice before conceding a late Fabian Schar equaliser.

Meanwhile, Everton nearly doubled their goal tally for the season in one game as they thrashed Wolves 4-0.

It was a big result for the Toffees, who moved five points clear of the drop zone.

It's set to be an emotional occasion as it will be the final time this fixture is played at Goodison Park.

Everton vs Liverpool: Sensational Salah

There are no words to describe Mohamed Salah anymore because he just keeps producing wonderful performance after performance.

On Wednesday against Newcastle, the Egyptian had a quiet first half, with the Toon keeping him out.

But in the second, he was like a man possessed as he first set up Curtis Jones before scoring two himself with brilliant low finishes.

He also hit the crossbar with an effort, and he's now the top goalscorer in the Premier League this season.

In fact, of the 29 goals Liverpool have scored in the Premier League this season, Salah has been directly involved in 21 of them.

Everton won 2-0 in their last Premier League game against Liverpool in April, last winning consecutive league Merseyside derbies in the 1984-85 campaign.

Liverpool's 2-0 loss in this exact fixture last season ended a 12-game unbeaten away run in the Premier League against Everton (W3 D9). They've not lost consecutive visits to Goodison Park since a run of three between 1992 and 1994.

Everton vs Liverpool is the fixture to have seen the most red cards (23) and been drawn 0-0 the most (12) in Premier League history. No side has scored more 90th minute winners against an opponent in the competition than Liverpool have against Everton (5).

Everton vs Liverpool: Predicted line-ups

Barring any injuries picked up against Wolves, Everton are unlikely to make too many changes.

Jordan Pickford's place in the team is nailed on as the club's number one goalkeeper.

Nathan Patterson is finally back from injury and will provide competition for Ashley Young.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot fires cheeky relegation joke at Manchester City after Mo Salah question

However, given the attacking talent at Liverpool's disposal, we could see Young.

Jarrad Branthwaite will partner James Tarkowski and Vitaliy Mykolenko should be at left-back.

In midfield, there are three potential options, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Orel Mangala competing for two spots.

Jack Harrison might come in on the right, while Beto and Dominic Calvert-lewin are competing for the one striker spot.

Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye's places in the XI are guaranteed, barring injury.

Alisson Becker is slowly approaching a return to fitness for Liverpool, but Caoimhin Kelleher has been excellent in his absence and will keep his place for this one.

Ibrahima Konate is out and Joe Gomez has stepped up to start alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson will also likely start, with Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas currently out.

In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch will have to find a new midfield partner, with Alexis Mac Allister suspended.

That means we are likely to see Curtis Jones.

On the right, it will be Salah, but the other attacking positions in Slot's team are up for grabs.

Luis Diaz started as the lone striker in the win over Manchester City and should take up that role again, with Cody Gakpo on the left.

Darwin Nunez missed some huge chances against Newcastle, so it would be no surprise to see him drop to the bench.

Since the start of last season, Liverpool are unbeaten in all eight of their Premier League games kicking off at 12.30 on Saturday (W6 D2), including a 2-0 win against Everton. Meanwhile, Everton are winless in their last six such matches (D2 L4), conceding exactly two goals in each game.

Everton have won just four of their 47 Premier League matches against teams starting the day top of the table (D9 L34). Only Spurs (35) have lost more games against table-topping teams in the competition than the Toffees.

Everton manager Sean Dyche has lost 12 Premier League matches against Liverpool (W3 D2), only losing more against Man City (14) and Arsenal (13). However, should he win this game, he'll have more wins against the Reds (2) than the previous seven Toffees managers managed combined (W1 D10 L8 - Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, Silva, Ancelotti, Benitez and

Lampard)

This is Arne Slot's first meeting with Everton as Liverpool manager. Only one Reds boss has won their first ever league Merseyside derby when that match has come away from home, with Kenny Dalglish overseeing a 3-2 victory in September 1985.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has scored seven Premier League goals against Everton - only Steven Gerrard (9) has scored more Merseyside derby goals in the competition.

Only Dwight McNeil (3 goals, 3 assists) has been involved in more

Premier League goals for Everton this season than Ashley Young (1 goal, 3 assists). Young became the fourth-oldest scorer in Premier League history on Wednesday night, aged 39 years and 148 days against Wolves.

Mohamed Salah has scored and assisted in 37 Premier League matches, the most of any player in history. He has netted in each of his last seven games but has never scored in eight in a row - Daniel Sturridge is the only Liverpool player to do so, achieving that feat in 2013-14.

Everton vs Liverpool: What has been said?

Reds boss Slot is confident that Salah will sign a new deal at Anfield.

Speaking after the Newcastle game, he said: "Every time we need Mo, he scores a goal.

"We are hoping and we expect he can continue this for a long time. He was outstanding in the second half, he did many special things for us. Mo had a massive impact.

"It's difficult to predict the future but Mo's in an incredible place in a very good team that gives him opportunities at the moment and he's able to do special things.

"He wasn't playing his best game at first but then he did things not many players can do.

"He's a special player. His finishing is so clinical. He leads by example and he trains so hard it is not surprising he does so well."
