Liverpool vs. Fulham: Head-to-head record and past meetings

sportsmole.co.uk, 1 December 2023, 07:15
Three days on from progressing to the last 16 of the Europa League, Liverpool welcome Fulham to Anfield on Sunday for their latest Premier League encounter.

Jurgen Klopp's side topped their continental group owing to a comfortable 4-0 beating of LASK Linz on Thursday evening, which marked a remarkable 10th win from 10 matches at Anfield across all tournaments in the 2023-24 campaign.

The Reds admirably came from behind to hold Manchester City to a 1-1 draw in their last top-flight showdown, but they still fell to third place in the Premier League table, as Arsenal's victory over Brentford sent the Gunners top.

Meanwhile, Fulham closed out gameweek 13 with a dramatic 3-2 success over Wolverhampton Wanderers, allowing the 14th-placed Cottagers to open up a 10-point advantage over the relegation places.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 73

Liverpool wins: 42

Draws: 18

Fulham wins: 13

From 73 previous clashes between Liverpool and Fulham in all tournaments, it comes as no surprise to learn that the Reds dominate the head-to-head column, defeating their capital counterparts on 42 occasions compared to a paltry 13 wins for the Cottagers.

Each of the first four showdowns between 1912 and 1934 was fought in the FA Cup, while nine successive League Cup ties took place between 1983 and 2000, but the two clubs have met exclusively in the Premier League since the 2001-02 season.

Only seven months have passed since Liverpool last hosted Fulham at their Anfield headquarters, where a Mohamed Salah penalty kept the Reds' fleeting hopes of Champions League qualification alive before they were dashed a couple of weeks later.

Prior to May's slender success, though, Liverpool had endured a three-game Premier League run without beating Marco Silva's side, playing out 2-2 and 1-1 draws in their last two Craven Cottage clashes in August 2022 and December 2020 respectively.

A 1-0 loss at Anfield in March 2021 was sandwiched in between those two stalemates, where Mario Lemina's effort on the stroke of half time prolonged Liverpool's home hoodoo behind closed doors, and Fulham also won by the same scoreline on Liverpool's turf in 2012 owing to a Martin Skrtel own goal.

However, the Reds' narrow defeat to the Cottagers in March 2021 represents their sole defeat from their most recent 10 Premier League clashes with Fulham, who have only ever managed to score four goals in 16 games at Anfield since the competition's inception in 1992.

A goals-per-game ratio of 0.25 is the worst of any away team to play more than 10 Premier League games against a specific opponent, and not since 1966 have Fulham managed to score more than once against Liverpool at Anfield, further stacking the odds against Silva's unfancied side this weekend.
