Liverpool vs Brentford: Salah out to continue home form against resurgent Bees

talksport.com, 10 November 2023, 15:43
Liverpool will be looking to return to winning ways as they welcome Brentford to Anfield this Sunday afternoon.

The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw with Luton last time out in the Premier League before they lost to Toulouse in the Europa League in midweek.

Jurgen Klopp is now eyeing a positive reaction with his side aiming to keep up with the leaders and remain in the top four.

They take on Brentford who have massively improved after a slow start to the season, winning their last three games.

Thomas Frank's men had only won one game before beating Burnley, Chelsea and West Ham consecutively and Liverpool are the next team in their way.

Liverpool vs Brentford: Mo's magic

Mohamed Salah will be craving another home Premier League game, with his recent form at Anfield unstoppable.

The Egyptian has been involved in an incredible 18 goals across his last 14 home league matches.

He has registered a goal or an assist in each of those fixtures, with only two other players in top-flight history doing so over 15 games.

Alan Shearer managed it twice between March 1995 and February 1996 and April 1996 and May 1997, while Thierry Henry achieved the feat between November 2002 and October 2003.

So Salah can join an elite group by getting involved in the goals again this weekend and it would not be a surprise if he manages to do so.

Liverpool have won their last seven home games against Brentford in all competitions, scoring 16 and conceding one, since a 4-3 loss in the top-flight in November 1937.

Brentford haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 16 meetings with Liverpool in all competitions, since a top-flight goalless draw at Anfield in April 1936.

Liverpool vs Brentford: Team news

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk missed the Europa League clash in midweek, however, that was only through illness.

He will likely be fit for the weekend but the same can't be said for Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones who have both picked up injuries.

They're expected to join Thiago and Stefan Bajectic in the treatment room while Andy Robertson also remains out after surgery.

Alexis Mac Allister will serve his suspension for receiving five bookings this season, meaning Wataru Endo is expected to start in midfield.

As for Brentford, goalkeeper Mark Flekken missed out last week with a dead leg but he is likely to be back in the net on Sunday.

The Bees have a lengthy injury list though, with Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, Kevin Schade, Mikkel Damsgaard, Josh Dasilva, and Shandon Baptiste all sidelined.

Liverpool have gained the most points from losing positions in the Premier League this season (11) and have only lost one of their last 10 games when falling behind (W4 D5), their 2-1 loss at Spurs in September.

Brentford have won their last three Premier League matches, scoring at least twice in each victory. The Bees haven't won four consecutive top-flight matches since March 1939 (five in a row), while they haven't won four top-flight games in a row while scoring 2+ goals ever previously.

Liverpool vs Brentford: What has been said?

Klopp has been full of praise for Brentford ahead of the game this weekend.

He said: "Super-challenging to play Thomas Frank and Brentford, for different reasons. They do really well

"I'm not sure they are 100 per cent happy with the season, but losing Ivan Toney - that player he was for them - really is brutal.

"But they are stable in the table, that's probably what Brentford want - getting through this situation and then when he is coming back, using him again or whatever.

"It's well organised; had a few problems in the season, I would say, to get used to the game without Ivan but when you look at the table they are in the middle with a tendency [of] going up.

"It's well organised, sensational set-pieces, all these kind of things. Really offensive players, really fast, counter-attacking really good.

"They change styles from time to time; if they consider you as a top-six team then it's a bit more defensive, if not they have a bit more possession parts.

"It's always interesting to play them and difficult as well. But it's Anfield and we should use that."

Liverpool have won their opening five home Premier League games this season - only twice in the Premier League era have they started a season with six wins at Anfield: 2019-20 (won first 17) and 2020-21 (first seven).

14 of Brentford's last 15 Premier League wins have come in London, the exception being a victory at Southampton in March. Since the start of last season, the Bees have only won two of their 16 games staged outside the capital (D6 L8).

Liverpool vs Brentford: How to follow

This Premier League clash will take place on Sunday, November 12.

Kick-off at Anfield is schedule for 2pm.

The game will not be shown live on TV in the UK.
