Liverpool loanee Rhys Williams allegedly racially abused during Swansea vs Luton

Swansea City have confirmed they have filed a report with police after defender Rhys Williams was allegedly racially abused during their Championship fixture with Luton Town.

Williams has joined the Swans on a season-long loan deal, looking to build on the senior football he enjoyed at Anfield last season.

The 20-year-old started the game at Kenilworth Road, but was withdrawn at the break with Luton leading 3-0.

Russell Martin's side then completed a miraculous comeback in the second half, scoring a 91st minute equaliser to keep them out of the bottom three.

But their celebrations were marred with the club alleging that a home spectator made a racist comment toward Williams.

A statement on the club's website reads: "Towards the end of today's Championship fixture against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, an allegation of racial abuse was made over comments made towards Swansea City's Rhys Williams from a home spectator.

"An official report was filed with the match official, Tony Harrington, and Bedfordshire Police at full-time.

"Swansea City condemns racism and abuse of all kinds because it has no place within football or any walk of life.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to both Bedfordshire Police and Luton Town Football Club for their swift response at the end of the game.

"Bedfordshire Police has launched a full investigation into the incident. Officers have been to the ground to carry out enquiries and are working with Luton Town to identify the people involved.

Swansea confirmed that Williams has been in touch with his parent club to ensure he is given full support, with Liverpool 's official account Tweeting out a message of support which read, "we're with you".

Martin speaking after the game said: "It's a tough thing for anyone to take. But for a young guy who's come here, who's playing football and actually trying to compete, for that to happen, it just completely threw him.

"Hopefully we get it dealt with in the right way and that person never comes to a football match again.

"It's something the players are having to face, people are still having to face and we're still having to deal with.

"I find it disgusting, repulsive, outrageous; all of those things.

Elsewhere in the Championship, two Birmingham City supporters were arrested following an allegation of racist abuse towards Peterborough defender Nathan Thompson.

The Posh released a statement confirming Thompson immediately reported the incident to a match official, with the two individuals identified and arrested.

Birmingham said they have a "zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination" and would "firmly support the action taken against anyone found guilty of such abhorrent behaviour."
