Lionel Messi becomes most decorated player in football history as he wins 44th career trophy

Lionel Messi is now the most decorated footballer in the history of the sport.

On Saturday night, the Argentinian icon picked up his first trophy with new side Inter Miami, which also happened to be the first silverware the club have won since being founded in 2018.

Miami triumphed 10-9 on penalties in the Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC.

The game ended 1-1 after Messi's 23rd-minute opener was cancelled out in the second half by Fafa Picault.

Messi of course converted his penalty in the shoot-out, which dragged on until Nashville goalkeeper Elliot Panicco saw his penalty saved by Miami's Drake Callender.

Messi made sure former Inter Miami captain DeAndre Yedlin was front and centre as they lifted the Leagues Cup together.

The trophy was the 44th major honour of his career.

This sees him surpass Dani Alves (43) as the most decorated player in the history of the game.

Included in Messi's trophy cabinet are four Champions Leagues, ten LaLiga titles, seven Copa Del Reys, eight Supercopa de Espanas, three Club World Cups and three UEFA Super Cups - all won with Barcelona.

These sit alongside the two Ligue 1 titles and one Trophee des Champions he won with PSG.
