Lineker makes Match of the Day joke with just one Prem game going ahead

Aston Villa vs Burnley was called off just hours before kick-off leaving Leeds United vs Arsenal as the only Premier League fixture set to go ahead before Saturday night's Match of the Day on BBC

Gary Lineker has joked about the Match of the Day running order with only one Premier League game going ahead.

BBC's highlights show was already struggling for content with Aston Villa vs Burnley and Leeds' game with Arsenal the only two to survive the Covid outbreaks.

But the former of those was postponed just hours before kick-off.

It means the Gunners' trip to Elland Road is the only game taking place in England's top flight.

As a result it will be the only game on Match of the Day, thus meaning there will be no disagreements about the running order.

Lineker tweeted: "The @BBCMOTD running order: Leeds United v Arsenal. Surely no one disagrees this week….then again, it is Twitter."

Fans can often take issue with how long into the show it takes for their team to be shown.

Now though, there can be no danger of that.

The postponement in the Midlands came after fresh positive tests in the Villa camp which forced the authorities into making the decision.

A Premier League statement said: "After reviewing all the new information provided by Aston Villa this morning and receiving separate medical advice, the [Premier League] Board approved the request as a result of the club not having enough players to field a team. This decision was based on the number of Covid-19 cases, injuries and illness."

Four of Saturday's game had already fallen foul of the Covid outbreak.

Manchester United were due to host Brighton and Brentford were set to travel to Southampton.

Watford's game with Crystal Palace and West Ham United's clash with Norwich City will also not go ahead.

Sunday so far has seen three of its four games survive, with Everton's game against Leicester City the only one called off.

The three title chasers are set to take to the field.

Manchester City and Chelsea are both on the road against Newcastle United and Wolves respectively.

Liverpool will head to north London to face Tottenham, who themselves have had Covid issues.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp does not see the need to stop the league however despite calls to do so.

He said: "Stopping the league is probably not the right thing but with the schedule we have to be more flexible.

"So far football kept it pretty much outside with the testing regimes, the massive disciplinary things for the boys did really well, but this time it is really difficult.

"I don't see the massive benefit of it [stopping the Premier League] because we come back [and] it is still the same."
